Ubuntu has marked the 16th anniversary of Ubuntu 4.10  “Warty Warthog,” which was its first release ever. The Linux operating system recently celebrated the anniversary. After six months of the release of Ubuntu 20.04  ” Focal Fossa,” Canonical has launched the latest version known as Ubuntu 20.10 “Groovy Gorilla.” The latest version has been released with its seven different official flavors: Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu MATE, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu Budgie. Ubuntu 20.10 is a non-LTS, or short-term release supported until July 2021, almost for nine months. However, Ubuntu 20.10  ” Groovy Gorilla” is not a significant release; it still has many new and exciting features to offer.

Ubuntu Desktop for Raspberry Pi 4

Ubuntu has featured desktop images for Raspberry Pi 4, allowing users to download and run desktop Ubuntu 20.10 on their models of Raspberry Pi with 4GB RAM at least. Even both Desktop and Server images also support the new Compute Module 4, Raspberry Pi. The users may boot the images of 20.10 on earlier models. Still, the latest Desktop images have been built only for the arm64 architecture and officially only the variants of Pi 4 with 8GB or 4GB RAM.

GNOME 3.38 Desktop Environment

The latest GNOME desktop is another significant change that Ubuntu 20.10 has included. It enhances the performance, users’ experience, and visual appearance. The GENOME 3.38 has introduced the much-needed separate button for ” Restart” in the System menu. Some other enhancements are the following:-

  • Better support for multiple monitors
  • Revamped app for GNOME Screenshot
  • App Grid that is customizable with a tab for no “Frequent Apps.”
  • Indicator for battery percentage.
  • Improvements in Core GNOME apps.
  • New app Welcome Tour written in Rust.

Support for Active Directory

Integration of Active Directory is the other optional feature that Ubuntu 20.10  has added in the Ubiquity Installer. When the users check the option, they will be directed to configure the Active Directory. The users will need to give information about the password, administrator, and the domain.

Software and Tools Upgrade

Ubuntu 20.10 also has included the updated software, tools, and subsystems to their latest versions. These features include:-

  • OpenJDK 11, glibc 2.32, LLVM 11, GCC 10, and NetworkManager 1.26.2
