This typewriter can be found in one of the most famous literary works: the poem “Gallow's Ghost” by James Joyce. On April 19, 1904, this vintage item typewriter was purchased by the author for $4.75 from a local secondhand store in New York City. Recently, I watched a video on the History Channel on the vintage typewriter called the Underwood “Digger”. If you are a student, you’ve come across the term before. It’s a very common type of typewriter. It’s designed to be portable, but it’s also capable of incredible accuracy. Who can forget the “D”. The Underwood did it best and more with the project that we now know as the Underwood.

Underwood widely known as the “father of typewriters”, is widely considered to be one of the greatest designers that have ever lived. Numerous books and articles have been written about the unique Underwood typewriter vintage item for sale, the design of which helped pave the way for modern typewriters and the birth of the personal computer. John Underwood (John Underwood Jr. or “Hank” as he was known by his friends) was born in Boston and grew up in an era where electricity was still a relatively new technology. Underwood, an American writer, was a key contributor to the typewriter industry. He has received the Academy of Typewriter Arts Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the typewriter industry. He was also an investor in the field of typewriter typewriters.

Typewriters were a big part of my early years in the field of business writing. Even as a child I was fascinated by them and was quick to push aside old typewriters’ antique collections if I got the chance. One night, while watching a movie at my Grandpa’s house, I saw a character that looked like an aged typewriter. This movie thriller made me wonder if the typewriters in the movie were still in use and whether or not a vintage typewriter even existed. The Underwood Typewriter is the leading founder of typewriter history. This machine was a complete breakthrough on its own when it was created. However, its design gave birth to other typewriter designs that followed it and made it very popular in the early twentieth century. Many typewriters have been built since then that have looked similar to this one, but they have all done their job differently. What makes this vintage typewriter special is the fact that it was the first machine manufactured to use cylinders, instead of the more common style of writing paper.
