Virgil van Dijk is first Liverpool star to cast doubt over future due to Jurgen Klopp exit

Liverpool fans may have to endure more worry over the coming months after captain Virgil van Dijk casted doubt on his future following the impending exit of Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk refused to commit his future to the club ahead of Jurgen Klopp's impending departure.

The 32-year-old arrived at Anfield in 2018 and has gone on to become one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history with a myriad of club and personal honours won over the past six years.

However, with just 18 months left on his contract, rumblings surrounding his future have intensified since Reds' boss Jurgen Klopp announced he'll be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Alongside Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also have 18 months left on their deal as Liverpool aim to tie down their three best players sooner rather than later.

The Netherlands captain was asked about his contract length and admitted that he can't say for certain what his future at the club looks like. “You have 18 months left?” Van Dijk was asked before replying: “That is correct – good maths. Listen, I don’t know. The club will have a big job on their hands, That is well known.

“To replace the manager and replace not only the manager, the staff is leaving, and there are so many things that will change. So the club has a big job on its hands and I am very curious which direction that will go in. But when that will be announced we will see our situation, I can’t say now.”

While most Liverpool fans may feel fairly comfortable regarding the contract situations of their biggest stars, it's no doubt a nervy proposition coupled with Klopp leaving the club which Van Dijk admitted is a “hard one to take”.

The centre-back was the first Reds player to speak publicly on the German's departure where he said: “It's a hard one to take, because the manager means so much for us, to me, to the club, to the whole Premier League I think. But he made the decision for him and his family. It was always going to be a tough one and it was definitely the case.”

The club remain on course for a potentially special final season for the 56-year-old as they remain in all four competitions this season and booked a place in the EFL Cup final on February 25 against Chelsea.
