VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, is shorthand for telecommunication technology, and it is also a modern alternative to traditional phones. Landline telephone systems have carried voice data for a century over a Public Switched Telephone Network (PTSN). VoIP allows voice calls transmitted over the internet, and your VoIP phone is a simple node on the internet with an IP address like your desktop computer.

However, VoIP phones work over the internet, but they behave almost the same as the traditional phones, and they use area codes and phone numbers, not user names and passcode.

Although your smartphone is an internet device that uses the cellular network to connect with the internet and the phone calls which you make with your voice plan are not VoIP rather than cellular calls are transmitted by the voice cellular network, and this is the reason that why most plans track voice as well as internet data uses separately.

How VoIP Works?

When you want to use voice over IP, then basically you need a dedicated VoIP desktop phone which is usually known as an IP phone which connects to the internet instead of plugging into the phone jack generally by plugging into the internet router with an electronic cable or another form of high speed of internet connection.

When you want to enable your phone, then you need to subscribe to a service plan with a VoIP service provider, and usually, businesses have VoIP accounts that are less expensive as a comparison to the traditional landline phone plans.

When you dial a phone number through a VoIP phone, the phone sends a packet of the data to the internet, which is transmitted as like any other kind of data; after that, the VoIP service provider sends the data from your phone to the phone number you dialed.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of VoIP:Advantages:

  • It is more dependable where the PTSN has a little repetition, and the calls can be lost or maybe incomplete when there is a network problem, but VoIP uses the internet which is strong and work routinely around outages and hardware problem.
  • VoIP is cheaper than the traditional landline. Many businesses like VoIP require significantly less hardware to connect a considerable amount of phone numbers to the PTSN. Residential users can frequently get VoIP with the internet and cable TV at the minimum cost compared to the landline from a traditional phone provider would cost.
  • It is a mobile. IP phones are internet devices where you can typically move an IP phone to any available Ethernet connection and there are no any restrictions for a specific desk or location. Generally, a VoIP user can use a compatible VoIP app on their phone to make calls when you are away from the VoIP phone.

Disadvantages:

  • Generally, it required a broadband internet connection. You do not need a considerable amount of bandwidth for your voice communication, but when your internet connection is below than 10Mbps, and then you can face problems with audio quality.
  • Internet connectivity problems can disturb phone service. Generally, VoIP is highly dependable, but when you have an internet connection problem, then it can take out both data and voice at the same time, and when you have a landline, then there are chances that it has not been affected by the internet outage.
  • You may have problems with 911 services. The FCC needs that VoIP provider connected with the PTSN emergency 911 services. Still, there are several exceptions and not all VoIP systems require to be compatible with Enhanced 911 services. There are maybe situations when a call to 911 does not provide emergency services with your location.
