The recent release of Volume 25 of My Hero Academia is probably the most important because it captures the rise of Shigaraki in the world of villains. Covering chapter 236-46 of the manga, it is a build-up to the battle between the heroes and Shigaraki’s forces. In the battle with the meta liberation army, he seems to have surpassed his limitations as he climbs up in the underworld. While Class 1-A students are having fun, hero No. 2 risks his life as a double agent.

The volume starts with a flashback to Shigaraki’s childhood. After Hana has put the blame on him for unlocking the photograph of Nana Shimura, his grandmother, Shigaraki’s father punishes him. Lost in his anger, he seems not to notice that his dog is withering away in his arms. When Hana comes to apologize, she is scared to see the dog, but before she could run away, he grabs her by the arm, and she withers away as well. The killing spree doesn’t end there; he goes on to kill his mother and grandmother, leaving his father to murder last.

However, his rage-filled murder spree’s high doesn’t last long as he finds himself aimlessly wandering the cities covered in blood. No one comes to his rescue despite his terrible condition, and although the world is full of heroes, he doesn’t find any of them. Finally, someone comes to the child’s aid but unfortunately, it’s not a hero but All for One. Shigaraki’s Decay Quirk is strong, and he can kill anyone within seconds. His family became one of his first victims, and All for One probably knew that he was someone he could manipulate to join the villains. And what better way of defeating the heroes than making the grandson of Nana Shimura, a villain?

Shigaraki gets over his flashback by realizing that he wanted to kill his father for a long time. According to him, his father’s death might seem like a tragedy, but for him, it was not the case as his heart was unencumbered as he got rid of his family. He finally disposes of his family’s severed hands that he has worn as shackles for so long with these realizations. This unleashes a decaying wave which gives the League of villains an advantage in the fight.

The battle between Meta Liberation Front Army with League of Villains ends with the former joining the latter under Shigaraki as Resdestro abdicates. They together form the Paranormal Liberation Front. Since he had finally won the leadership of such a large organization and had thousands of villains working for him, he no longer needed to do anything else to prove himself. So, Shigaraki went to Dr. Ujiko to get the power that he had been promised long ago. He is told that even though the process will take a few months, nothing will be beyond his reach, not even All for One.

Meanwhile, the students of Class 1-A are enjoying at the school and also practicing for media interviews. After the exemplary courage shown by Endeavor against Hood, it appears that every hero has become even more dedicated. After the school, the teachers are informed in a meeting that work studies have begun, and every student has to take part in it as mandated by the Hero Public Safety Commission (HPSC). After the meeting, the principal and All Might seem concerned about the possibility that there might be a traitor lurking between them.

While celebrating Christmas in the dorm, Shoto invites Bakugo and Izuku to intern under his father. Meanwhile, Hawks has infiltrated the Paranormal Liberation Front as a double agent to gather information about the villains’ next move. However, he soon realizes the risks he is taking, so he decides to communicate in code with the heroes.

We then look back at Izuku’s internship under hero no. 1 Endeavor. After they are done fighting Starservant and his lackeys, Hawks asks Endeavor if he had read the Meta Liberation War Book. If he hadn’t, he tells him that he had already marked important parts in his copy, and he should take some time out to go through it. When he gets back to his Agency, Endeavor contemplates what Hawks was trying to tell him. So, he picks up the book that Hawks was telling him to read. He was surprised to find that there was a message that Hawks was trying to send through the text he had marked. If the second letter of the marked text was read together, it read – The Paranormal Liberation Front will strike in four months.

The villains are certainly going for an all-out attack to destroy the heroes. It is high time that preparations are done accordingly for the threat the looms around the heroes. The work studies program’s recommencement is a step in the right direction, but they will need to do more than just bolstering their numbers. The students won’t be enough to take down PLF. At the end of Volume 25, Hawks can be seen hoping that the next spring will bring a smile with it. Hopefully, the inevitable battle with the villains goes well, and they can defeat the villains who are breathing down their necks.
