Orthopedic Implants and Instruments are special medical devices that are specifically designed to be used for the surgical treatment of injuries and other conditions involving our musculoskeletal system. More commonly, these devices are applied for the treatment of fractures.

Now, there are hundreds of different types of trauma implants available, and they all have a specific purpose to serve. Thus, one cannot use any random implant for the treatment of orthopedic conditions. There are many factors associated with the selection of orthopedic implants to ensure improved post-surgical results.

In this post, we will discuss some important parameters that are required to be considered before the selection and the use of a trauma implant.

Important Factors to Be Considered for the Use of Orthopaedic Devices

Patient Selection

Now, this is important. Orthopedic implants cannot be applied to any of the patients as several factors are required to be considered. Right patient selection is very important as if not done, the surgery might pose complications. An immunological intolerance test is required to be performed in patients, and for that, appropriate foreign antibody tests are done. Besides this, certain other parameters are also taken into the consideration and they may include:

Alcohol addictionDegenerative diseases, if anyBMI of the patientAge

Implant Selection

Once it is confirmed that orthopedic surgery can be successfully done, it’s time to select the implant. Here, the selection of the right implant is necessary. For this, the surgeon closely examines the injury, its location, and its severity. The size of the implant also plays a vital role in ensuring the success of the surgery.

During the application, the surgeon always ensures the correct placement of the implant as, if it is placed wrongly, the chances of implant failure become high, and who knows a serious post-surgical complication may also occur.

Post-Operative Care

After the surgery, the surgeon guides the patient about the activities that he/she should and shouldn’t perform. If the instructions given by the surgeon are not followed, certain complications may occur. Ignoring the guidelines may also result in implant failure.

Make sure not to put pressure on the operated limb, as doing so might displace the implant. Besides all this, it is advised to use assistive devices for moving around, especially when the implant is applied to the leg or the lower limb.

Implant Removal

Now, when it comes to removing the implant, then this decision is taken by the doctor based on the patient’s condition and the type of surgery done. Implant removal is not required in all cases as no major complications are noticed. The decision to remove the implant is only taken when it starts to cause problems like irritation, persistent pain, bleeding, bruising, and/or swelling.
