Weddings in India aren’t like that of anywhere in the world. They are extrovertedly filled with rituals and long processes. Probably this is what makes it a very unique country to get married in the first place. One of such states that has a unique matrimonial ritualistic occasion is Orissa. The people in Orissa believed to be very different from that of the entire country. They live a very simple life and therefore, tend to have their ceremonies as simple as possible. But coming from the same country, Oriya matrimonials are not different when it comes to the processes and the huge amount of rituals.

There are various rituals which mostly include pre-wedding, the day of the wedding, and post-wedding. All these together make up a perfect Oriya matrimony or wedding. Below mentioned a few of the most famous rituals that are followed during and Oriya wedding –

Pre-wedding

The Oriya people mostly conduct their rituals in three different sects. One of the most important ones being the pre-wedding.

Nirbandh

Nirbandh is a pre-wedding ritual that mostly involves the father of both the bride and the groom who take a vow to get their children married. It is a ceremonious engagement that takes place before the wedding.

Jai Ragada

In this pre-wedding ritual, where wedded women of the families grind Biri Dal on a milestone by continuously praising the milestone. Then Haldi is applied to the invitation card and is offered to Lord Jagannath in Puri followed by the relatives of both the bride and groom.

Mangan

Commonly termed as Haldi in various parts of North India Mangan is an Oriya ritual that mostly revolves around putting turmeric on the body of both the bride and groom followed by a quick but taken by both. It generally involves 7 when did women first applying the turmeric on the body of the bride and groom followed by others. It is a fun occasion where both the bride and groom get to enjoy themselves

Wedding Day

Many couples who meet in Oriya matrimonial sites tend to keep these things in mind that proper which words are maintained within both the family, as different cast group in Orissa have mostly different rituals.

Diya Mangula Puja

In this wedding ritual, a female Barber within the family will offer the wedding attire of the bride to the local temple and will pray for the well-being of the new life partners and their new journey together.

Makuta

As the name suggests the bride and groom in this ritual with their crowns on the heads generally indicates an important ritual in the Oriya wedding. The name comes from the ritual itself.

Barajatri

The groom along with all his relatives arrives at the destination of the wedding where the mother of the bride generally does and aarti of the groom and applies Tilak on his forehead. This entire process is called barajatri in an Oriya shadi.

Kanyaadaan

Very much like any other North Indian wedding, the process of Kanyadan is when the father gives up her daughter in the process of the wedding.

Saptapadi

A very important and secret ritual that is mandatory to perform in a Hindu wedding is the Saptapadi. In this ritual, the bride and groom take seven rounds around the sacred fire and swear their allegiance to each other.

Post-wedding

Even people who find each other on matrimony sites put emphasis that people in Orissa do follow the rich words which last up to post-wedding. Unlike any other wedding Oriya weddings also consists of a few post-wedding rituals –

Sala Bida

In this Oriya post-wedding ritual the brother of the bride gives a punch on the back of the groom to remind him of his newly acquired responsibilities.

Kauri Khela

In this fun post-wedding ritual the bride and groom are each asked to hide a kauri in their hands while the other alternative is asked to find out.

Ashtha Mangala

Ashta Mangala happens 8 days after the wedding and is organised by the bride's family which includes a hefty and a large feast for the whole family.

These are a few of the most famous rituals that take place in an Oriya Matrimony.
