Janmashtami is a Hindu festival held on the eighth (Ashtami) day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September) to commemorate the birth (janma) of the god Krishna. In Krishna mythology, the number eight has another meaning: he is the eighth child of Devaki, Krishna's mother. This year on Monday, August 30, 2021, Janmashtami will be observed.

The extravaganza of Dahi-Handi

On the second day of Khishna Janmashtami, Dahi Handi (curd pot) is celebrated. Shri Krishna was a naughty child. He was a butter fanatic. He would steal the butter that the gopis had cooked. (Gokul's young women) Devaki, his foster mother, went behind him with a stick in hand to chastise him after the gopis protested. She was unable to catch Krishna, the infant. She decided to bind him with a rope. Krishna let her tie him because he knew how much his mother adored him. She didn't penalize him in any way. She chastised Krishna and warned him not to steal butter in the future.

She hugged Krishna. Her heart melted when she saw Krishna's charming smile. As a result, little Krishna was given the moniker Makhanchor (one who steals butter). Devakinandan (Devaki's son) is another name for Krishna.

Dahi Handi is revered for its resemblance to Krishna stealing butter. Using a rope, an earthen pot containing butter, ghee (milk fat), dry fruits, and milk is suspended at a height. Energetic guys from a human pyramid, climbing on top of one another to reach the pot and destroy it. The Dahikala (pot ingredients) is then distributed to everyone. The Dahi Handi festival promotes teamwork and hence emphasizes the value of collaboration.

The celebration of Janmashtami is a mark of beliefs and cultural unity in diversity. Though there are variations in festivities, the essence of the Janmashtami stays unified and intact in the hearts of its believers.
