What Does a Full Respray Cost? Inside the Pricing at a Premium Car Paint Shop

What Is a Full Respray?

A full respray means every external painted surface is refinished, not just one damaged panel. At a proper car paint shop this includes stripping or sanding back the existing coating, repairing dents and rust, priming, colour application in a controlled spray booth, baking, clear coat, and a final cut and polish.

It is very different from a spot repair or blend. That difference in labour hours is the single biggest reason respray pricing varies so widely between one car paint shop and another.

Full Respray Cost Ranges in Australia

Budget respray ($3,500 – $6,000): Minimal disassembly, limited prep, single-stage paint. Panels are masked rather than removed. Suitable for older vehicles where appearance matters more than longevity.

Mid-range respray ($6,000 – $12,000): Partial disassembly, proper rust and dent rectification, two-pack paint with a quality clear coat. This is the realistic bracket for most daily drivers at a reputable car paint shop.

Premium / restoration respray ($12,000 – $25,000+): Full disassembly of doors, bumpers, lights and trim, bare-metal preparation, high-solids clear, multi-stage or metallic and pearl finishes, and extensive polishing. This is where a premium car paint shop earns its reputation.

Figures are indicative. Always request a written, itemised quote.

What Drives the Price Up or Down?

Vehicle size. A dual-cab ute or large SUV needs significantly more material and booth time than a hatchback.

Paint type. Solid colours are the most affordable. Metallics, pearls, candy and matte finishes require more coats, more skill and more expensive product.

Condition of the panels. Rust, previous poor repairs, filler-heavy panels and stone chip damage all add hours before a drop of colour is sprayed. Preparation is usually 60 to 70 percent of the total labour at any serious car paint shop.

Colour change. Changing colour means painting door jambs, engine bay edges and boot shuts. Expect a meaningful jump in cost.

Disassembly level. Removing trim delivers a far cleaner result than masking around it, but it adds labour.

Why the Cheapest Quote Is Rarely the Cheapest Outcome

A very low respray quote usually signals shortcuts: skipped prep, thin clear coat, masking instead of removal, or budget product that fades within a few Australian summers. Redoing a failed respray costs more than doing it correctly once.

A premium car paint shop invests in spectrophotometer colour matching, a temperature-controlled baking booth, OEM-grade primers and clears, and trained painters. That is what you are paying for, and it is what protects your resale value.

How to Compare Car Paint Shop Quotes Properly

Ask every car paint shop the same questions: Is the vehicle being disassembled or masked? What paint system and how many clear coats? Is rust repair included or extra? Are jambs and shuts being painted? Is there a written warranty on the finish? Is cut and polish included?

When the answers are itemised, price differences between quotes usually explain themselves immediately.
