We own several types of chargers for charging our devices. This is because products, like Apple phones and devices, and Microsoft’s Surface computers require their unique connectors to be charged. This may not remain the same very soon.

The European Union declared a new law that enforces companies to manufacture the C-type port only for charging their devices. The devices like smartphones, earbuds, and wireless keyboards will be used by a common charger by 2024. Further after the completion of two years, the same rule will apply to new laptops.

This new law may affect consumers worldwide as it would cost extra to make products with different charging ports for Europe only. As per the union, the new law will help in reducing e-waste. However, Apple is not very happy about this new mandate and has asked the European Commission by letter.

Change Your Charging Setup

  • We need to incorporate connectors into products that we use to recharge our devices, this includes power bricks and wires. The new law of the European Union requires all devices to use USB-C by 2026.
  • When we buy a power brick that hooks up to the computers or phones via wire we need to make sure that it supports a USB-C port.
  • Devices like phones and computers already have models that support USB-C power cables so their use can be continued.
  • The new rule does not apply to wireless charging so going wireless can be an option.

Avoid Fancy and Expensive Accessories for a Few Years

The expensive and fancy products of Apple contain Lightning ports.

If we don’t have an urgent requirement for those products we should wait a couple of years. This is because once the law passed by the Union takes effect there will be a hassle to carry USB-C cables for phones and computers and lightning cables for keyboards and mice.

The European law will benefit both the union and the user and in a few years, we will be using some type of connector for all our devices.

The European Union has made it mandatory for manufacturers to manufacture the C-type port only for charging of Phones, Laptops, etc. by the end of 2024. The Union believes that this will reduce the e-waste issue. Users can prepare themselves by employing certain precautionary measures. Seeing the new law getting into action it would be wise to wait for a few years to buy expensive and fancy products. Without thinking this through you may find this transition bad and troublesome. USB-C is a good technology and allows devices to be refilled with the charge at the earliest effect. This is why USB-C is very popular nowadays.
