Because the hoisting equipment runs above the bridge girder, EOT double girder cranes often require extra space from the top of the runway beam to the lowest impediment of the structure. As a result, if a twin girder crane is wanted, there must be at least 4′ of runway clearance to the lowest impediment. Unless the hoist is placed in between the girders, which is often expensive, the clearance requirement over the runway grows with the crane's capacity.
