Why are there two cities with the name Kansas City?
The town of Westport, which is presently located at the intersection of Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, was established by John McCoy in the 1830s, marking the beginning of what is now known as Kansas City, Missouri. McCoy chooses this location to set up a supply shop for settlers traveling the Santa Fe Trail. Then, barely two miles north of his village, he built a riverboat landing on the cliffs at the Missouri River's bend. The Town Company was established in 1838 by 14 investors, including McCoy, with the goal of acquiring riverside property. Westport Landing was a part of this region, which was incorporated as the Town of Kansas in 1850. After that, in 1853, the state of Missouri incorporated the region as the City of Kansas, and in 1889, it changed its name to Kansas City. On December 2, 1897, the city of Kansas City, Missouri, seized John McCoy's hamlet, the former town of Westport.
On the Kansas side of the river, in Wyandotte County, other communities were growing at this time. In 1872, some of these minor communities became part of Kansas City. City authorities in Kansas were able to profit from the success of Kansas City, Missouri by calling this town after the expanding metropolis on the Missouri side of the state border. It's also possible that Wyandotte County residents believed they had a stronger claim to the name “Kansas City” than Missouri residents did.
Even though Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri are still two separate incorporated cities, they now form the Kansas City Metropolitan region together with a number of additional cities and suburbs.
