If you ask any trekker about the best trek in the Eastern Himalaya that has everything beautiful, the obvious answer is the Sandakphu trek. The trip provides panoramic views of four of the world's highest mountains. The Sandakphu trek is best for nature lovers and animal enthusiasts, with majestic monasteries steeped in rich cultural past, mountains ornamented with green alpine trees, charming villages, verdant paddy valleys, emerald woodland, and hues of flowers. The Sandakphu trek, with its panoramic vistas of Mount Everest and the Kanchenjunga Range, is maybe the only trek route in the world that conjures the Himalayan scenery of Nepal. Therefore, it is regarded as the most beautiful trek in the Indian Himalayas.

In the Sandakphu trek, you have to walk through lush forests and villages. It also offers a spectacular view of the world's highest snowline, spanning from the snow-capped peaks of Nepal to Bhutan and further east to Tibet. The hike route zigzags along the Singalila National Park and the Indo-Nepal border, making this an exciting journey. You'll never know when you're in Nepal and when you're in India. Moreover, this journey will captivate any traveler, young or old, from beginning to end.

Why is the Sandakphu trek famous?

The Sandakphu Trek is famous for many things. To begin with, it is one of West Bengal's highest treks. It gives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to physically walk towards heaven because all five of the tallest peaks are present to reflect the trail's beauty. It is referred to as “Trekkies Wonderland.” You will be escorted to numerous hidden jewels when you begin the Sandakphu trek in Darjeeling. In this trek, you will get a chance to visit the Himalayan hamlets of Gorkhey, Tumling Tonglu, Samanden, Chitrey, and others and enjoy the panoramic view of Everest and Kanchenjunga along with other peaks such as Makalu, Chomo Lonzo, and Lhotse. There is a lake called Kalapokhri Lake on your way to Sandakphu, where you can learn about the ‘Sacred Black Waters.'

Places to visit on the way to Sandakphu trek

  • Maneybhanjang: It is the base for the treks to Sandakphu. You need to know that Maneybhanjang is the Singalila Land Rover Association headquarter, which operates a fleet of 45 half-century-old British-era huge beasts. These land rovers run on the mountain road of this area. Maneybhanjang serves as a border crossing point as well. When traveling from Darjeeling, the houses on the right side of the road belong to India and on the left side belong to Nepal. The majority of hikers begin their journey in Maneybhanjang. Here, you can see a modest Buddhist pagoda and listen to the sound of flattering flags in heavy winds. There are a few trekkers' huts and hotels where you can spend the night.

  • Meghma: It is a gorgeous tiny village on the way to Sandakphu. It is located 9 kilometers from Mane Bhanjan and has a height of 9,514 feet, which is usually shrouded beneath a carpet of cloud, hence the name “Megh,” which means “cloud” in the local language. Mother Nature has crammed all of her riches into this location. Meghma has a big SSB (Security Agency) camp, a primary school, and a monastery. This location is so gorgeous that visitors are enchanted and want to return again and again.
  • Tumling:  This little Nepalese town is located 2 kilometers away from Meghma. Tumling is also the rest stop for all hikers on their trip to Sandakphu. It is a fantastic viewpoint located 2970 meters above sea level and the entrance to the Singalila National Park. As you enter Singalila National Park from Tumling, you will be rewarded with a diverse range of vegetation, fauna, and avifauna. Mt. Kanchenjunga may be seen easily from here on a clear sunny day.

During the Sandakphu trek, a walk through Singalila National Park and the forests of blooming magnolias and rhododendrons is a terrific way to appreciate nature's grandeur. You can explore the orchid farms, emerald green woodland and visit the monasteries. You can also take a break from your usual adventure activities and visit the Darjeeling tea garden, where you can learn about different types of tea and spend some time in nature. To summarise, if you enjoy trekking, you cannot pass up the Sandakphu Trek.
