Why Timing Matters for a Baby's Hip Ultrasound

Not every baby gets a hip ultrasound at the same age, and that's on purpose. The right time to scan depends on why the referral was made in the first place. Ultrasound works especially well in younger babies because so much of the hip is still cartilage, which doesn't show up clearly on an X-ray. As babies get older, that cartilage turns to bone, and imaging options change. If your baby was flagged for a specific risk factor, like breech birth or a family history of hip issues, the timing your doctor recommends is worth sticking to rather than pushing back. Delaying isn't usually a good idea when there's a specific reason for the referral.
