In a sign of support for the island democracy that China claims as its own territory on Thursday the U.S. government announced trade talks with Taiwan, by prompting a warning with Beijing that it would take immediate action if necessary to “safeguard its sovereignty.”

Additionally, to intimidate Taiwan the announcement comes after Beijing fired missiles into the sea. To visit the island in 25 years after this month Nancy Pelosi the U.S. House Speaker became the highest-ranking US official.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government criticized the planned talks about the violation of its stance that Taiwan has no right to foreign relations. Despite this, it warned Washington not to encourage the island to try to make its de facto independence permanent, Beijing said that a step ahead would lead to war.

“China firmly opposes this,” said by the Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Shu Jueting. In Washington she called to “fully respect China’s core interests”. Simulating a response to a Chinese missile attack also on Thursday Taiwan’s military held a drill with missiles and cannons.

Taiwan and China split and said that they have no official relations after a civil war in 1949 but are bound by billions of dollars of both trade and investment. To the People’s Republic of China the island has never been part, but by force the ruling Communist Party says it is obliged to unite if necessary with the mainland.

President Biden’s coordinator, Kurt Campbell, for the Indo-Pacific region said last week that trade talks would deepen our ties with Taiwan but stressed policy wasn’t changing. With Taiwan, the US has no diplomatic relations, its ninth-largest trading partner, but maintains extensive informal ties.

The talks made no mention of tension The U.S. The Trade Representative office’s announcement with Beijing said that the formal negotiations would develop trade and regulatory ties, on the other hand a step that would entail closer official interaction.

The announcement also said that it is expected that the first round of negotiations will take place early this fall. China’s efforts to use its status as the island’s biggest trading partner as political leverage being allowed to export more to the US might help Taiwan blunt.

For Pelosi’s Aug.2 visit the mainland blocked imports of Taiwanese citrus and other food in retaliation. In relation with the US, for the trade talks Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed “high welcome” which it said will lead to a “new page”.

Apart from this, it also said in a statement that “As the situation across the Taiwan Strait has recently escalated, to maintain security and stability the U.S. government will continue across the Taiwan Strait to take concrete actions”.

U.S.-Chinese relations are at their lowest level in decades amid disputes over security, technology, trade and Beijing’s treatment of Muslim minorities and Hong Kong. the American Institute in Taiwan, under the auspices of Washington’s unofficial embassy would be conducting negotiations, said the U.S. Trade Representative.

“China always opposes any form of official exchanges between any country and the Taiwan region of China,” to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty China will take all necessary steps, said by the Chinese spokesperson shu.

On the status of China and Taiwan, Washington says it takes no position but wants their dispute settled peacefully. By federal law to defend itself the U.S. government is obligated to see that the island has the means.

Moreover, Campbell said during a conference call last Friday that we will continue to take calm and resolute steps to uphold peace and stability in the face of Beijing’s ongoing efforts to undermine it, and to support Taiwan.

Its companies have invested almost $200 billion in the mainland, the government of Taiwan said. Moreover, Beijing says that a 2020 census found some professionals, 158,000 Taiwanese entrepreneurs, and others living on the mainland.

With 23.6 million people Taiwan has recently launched its own military drills in response. The U.S.-Taiwanese talks will also cover the environment, labour, agriculture, digital technology, the status of state-owned enterprises as well as non-market policies by the U.S. Trade Representative.
