- Visit Your Orthodontist/ Cosmetic Dentist!
First, the patient should visit an orthodontist/cosmetic dentist for a consultation.
The Orthodontist examines the teeth and takes a precise digital scan of the mouth/ an impression of your mouth to replicate your teeth on a model.
Then a custom treatment plan is made.
Patients are able to see a digital preview of their new smile before the aligners are created.
- Aligners Preparation
The custom treatment plan is sent to a digital dental lab.
The patient’s dental arches are examined to ensure proper fit.
The sequence of aligners is staged based on the doctor’s instructions. Then, the digital plan is placed online for the doctor to review and approve.
Once approved, the aligners are fabricated.
The clear aligners are sent directly to the doctor and then delivered to the patient.
- Follow Your Doctor’s Instructions!
Patients get a new set of aligners every 1 to 2 weeks.
They must wear them for about 22 hours per day to correct even mild malalignment.
The aligners should fit snugly against your teeth without any large and noticeable gaps.
To prevent problem areas from showing up, your orthodontist will give you a couple of small foam cylinders known as chewies.
You should bite down on the chewies every morning and evening while wearing your aligner trays to make sure your aligners continue to fit close to your teeth.
If there are noticeable gaps between your aligner and the edges of your teeth that aren’t corrected by using the chewies daily, your teeth may not be tracking well. This can be due to a number of reasons, including not wearing your aligners enough or needing to revise the tray.
Monitor the fit of your Aligners and contact your orthodontist if you have any concerns.
Each set of aligners will slowly move the teeth into the correct position, according to individual treatment plans.
Depending on the patient, treatment can take anywhere from 10 to 24 months, sometimes longer.
- Wear Retainers Post Treatment!
After treatment is complete, a custom clear/ colored-removable retainer is made from a mold of the newly straightened teeth. Retainers should be worn every night while sleeping to ensure malocclusion does not recur over time.
