iPhones are already performing a multitude of functions, and if this someday includes starting your car, then the people can imagine how the day will be unique for them. Apple is currently working on enabling a device that could not only be able to unlock or lock your car but also start your vehicle. The feature of “CarKey” under iOS 13.4 beta is under development, and people hope that it may be very soon the people will become able to add car keys to their wallet app.

It is also noticeable that the feature will not only limited to Apple iPhones or Apple Watches but will also be introduced to Android phones. Apple, along with Samsung and LG electronics, is the part of the Car Connectivity Consortium, which is focused on enabling seamless connectivity from device to vehicle and has announced a crucial digital key standard. The essential digital key standard will allow drivers to use the digital keys in any car by downloading them in their smart devices.

Standardizing Whatever is Possible

The idea of using smartphones or iPhones to lock, unlock, or starting a car is not a new idea and not even a newly discovered technology. People can purchase such vehicles, which can be started by using digital keys. You can take the example of the Tesla App used in Tesla, which lets you lock, unlock, or even start the car from the phone you have. The procedure is straightforward to use the Tesla App as you need to download the app for Android or iPhone and can further control your vehicle through the app.

The users of the Tesla app can enable the mobile access of the app while clicking on “controls” and then further tap on “Safety & Security” on the touchscreen of your car, and in the same way, the users can disable the access too. Audi also offers an app to unlock, lock, or start your vehicle with the use of your phone, but the process to set up the access could be confusing, and the users have to handle it patiently.

How CarKey Works

It has already been released by 9to5Mac, that the newly launched  “CarKey” feature developed in the reference of iOS13.4 betas and the application programming interface can be plugged into car manufacturers very soon. The users can take advantage of the newly developed feature if they have an NFC reader, and their car is supporting the new feature “CarKey.” The users can easily lock, unlock, or even their vehicle by CarKey as the use of near field communication doesn’t require any network connection. The users can also configure the CarKey to their face Id for security reasons, and also, you can even share your “CarKey”  with other people. When you share your CarKey with other people, then they will be able to lock, unlock or even start your car, and you will not need to hand over the key fob you have to them.

When will People Get CarKey?

The users are waiting eagerly for the new updates regarding the newly developed feature. But, the users have to keep patience as it may not be part of the final release of 13.4 iOS beta updates and came to arrive with iOS 14. However, it may be expected that the new feature will be released until September 2020, but Apple has not made any official statement regarding the release of the new feature. It is noteworthy that there is no requirement of new hardware in the CarKey, and if the car has inbuilt NFC hardware, then the car manufacturing companies can update the apps in their vehicles to support CarKey.
