The city of Richmond, Virginia, announced late last week that the Resort Casino Assessment Panel has entered the next phase of the ongoing casino selection process.
The unit gathered to evaluate proposals from companies interested in running a Las Vegas-style casino resort downtown and to recommend a preferred bidder to Richmond City Council.
During the proposal request process between December and February, the city received six bids. It culled three of the proposed projects in March and eliminated a fourth project in late April. The city announced on Friday that the evaluation committee will begin the negotiation phase in the selection process. This is actually the end of the multi-level process of selecting preferred casino developers. At the end, the Commission will recommend one of the two bids, which are still in contention, to the Mayor of Richmond, Lebanon.
The rating agency said it expects recommendations to be ready by the end of May. Recommendations will be made on which of the two operators above will participate in the Nov. 2 vote and which venues will be proposed.
Under the Virginia Casino Act, Richmond has the final say on whether to host the casino by voting on the issue in a citywide referendum.
