Can You Learn Animation Without Being Good at Drawing?

Hello, everyone. Today’s blog is on how you can learn animation without having drawing skills. What do you think about animation, Character animation, sketching, and all, right? Then you think, can you learn animation without being good at drawing? Then, yes, you can learn animation, because drawing is not required in many types of animation. And you can even learn drawing later. You can easily start your journey without having good drawing skills.

Types of Animation, where drawing skills aren’t required

  • Motion Graphics- Under this, Tools like After Effects are used, and involve animating text, elements, and designs. Rather than drawing, the focus is more on timings, effects, and transitions. 
  • Stop Motion Animation- No drawing skills are required here. It is done by hand. It used moving objects, like paper cutouts and clay objects. In Stop Motion, moving objects are used. 
  • Cut-out or Puppet Animation- These include different types of animation softwares, for example, Adobe Character Animator. To create moving puppets or pre-made assets. You can focus on the animation process by hiring someone to design the parts. 


Let’s now see what skills matter more than drawing.


What Skills matter most instead of drawing?

If you don’t know about Illustrator, it is okay to get into the animation. Just using these skills. 


  • Storytelling- What animation is?, bringing stories to life. The more engaging characters you used in your stories, the more it liked by the audience. It is more important than drawing. 
  • Trimming and Movement Understanding- If you understand how to move things naturally, it will help you to make your animation smooth and real. Then, no matter it is a bouncing ball or a character walking. 
  • Software Proficiency- Now most of the animation, uses softwares like Toon Boom, Adobe After Effects, and Blender. Just learn these softwares, and this will take you far, without even getting sketching skills.
  • Creativity and Imagination- Being creative with your characters, scenes, and visuals is more important than drawing a perfect face. So, just don’t think that, without drawing skills, you cann’t thrive in animation.  


Can You Learn drawing later?

Definitely yes, and even many animators do. If you really want to get those skills, you can learn them later. In fact, practicing expressions, simple shapes, and poses will improve your visual thinking. But, yes, it’s still not a barrier to starting your journey in animation.
