Hey crafters! Do you want to learn how to make a vinyl decal on Cricut? I’ve got your back! In this tutorial, I am going to share step-by-step instructions for creating a vinyl decal. The blog will help you make any decals, such as a wall, window, or car decals. Also, the procedure of creating stickers is easy and simple.

Recently, my son shifted to his own separate room and was curious to decorate his room. Being a professional crafter, I get to use my Cricut machine to decorate her room. Since my son is a science nerd, I made a vinyl decal and added it to his file folder. He always wanted something like this, and he often kept his science projects.

With this vinyl decal project, I will show you how you can also make your own decals in less time. So join me on this journey and follow me with detailed instructions.

Essential Supplies for Creating Cricut Decals

I will add decals to the file folder. Therefore, I have added a file folder to my supply list. However, you can choose any blank wherever you want to use the decals. Before learning how to apply a vinyl decal, you have to install theCricut Design Space on your device.

Despite these, below is the list of basic supplies:

  • Vinyl
  • Transfer tape
  • Cricut machine (I am using Cricut Explore Air 2)
  • Weeding Tool
  • File Folder Blank
  • Cutting mat
  • Scraper tool

How to Make a Vinyl Decal on Cricut?

I am using a Cricut Explore because it uses a fine point blade; you can use any other Cricut machine. So, be it Cricut Maker or Joy, all of them are compatible with cutting the vinyl. So, let’s start the step-by-step procedure to make this fantastic decal. Let’s get started:

Step 1: Create Decals on Design Space

So, this is the design that I created, and I believe that it is going to be very easy for you. The font selection and the right choice of icon make it so relatable! Besides, I also made another decal that you can see on the right, “Art Class,” in the image below. However, I created another decal to add to a notebook because my son is adept at drawing.

Next, let’s move to another step, where we will place the vinyl on the cutting mat.

Step 2: Place the Vinyl on Your Cricut Mat

This step is crucial as we are going to place the vinyl on the cutting mat. While placing it on the mat, make sure the top face is up and the back side is down. Here, I will not mirror my image because I am not using Heat Transfer Vinyl (HT

But if you are making car decals and want to apply them inside of the car, then you must mirror your design. Now I am ready with my design, let’s move to load the mat into the machine. To load the mat, you have to press the Load button given on the top.

Step 3: Cut and Weed Out the Vinyl Decal

Since I have loaded the mat into the machine, I have to return to Design Space and click the Make It button. As a result, the software will command the cutting machine to cut the sent file. Once the design is cut, you need to unload the mat and remove the design. To remove the design, you should use the weeding tool. The weeding tool is the tool that helps us remove the excess materials.

By now, you have learned how to make a vinyl decal on Cricut. Further, in the next section, I will show you how to apply a vinyl decal.

Step 4: Apply and Show Unique Cricut Decals

When you have finished weeding the design, you have to take a piece of transfer tape. The size of the tape should be enough so that it can cover your whole decals. Next, remove the protective layer from the tape and place it on the top of the decal. You should use the scraper tool to adhere the tape to the design.

Afterward, you have to flip the design over and remove the paper backing. In the end, you will see a complete design on your transfer tape.

Note: If your design consists of different elements with colors, then you have to repeat the above steps for each element.

Now, let’s apply it to the blank (folder file). Make sure the blank is neat and clean. After that, you have to apply the decal to the blank. Apply it with firm pressure.

Once the decal is adhered, you have to peel the tape slowly.

Now, I have taught you how to make a vinyl decal on Cricut; you can start your own decals. The process will be the same for all kinds of decals, including mug, wall, and car decals.
