Nothing can be more frustrating than starting up your dishwasher only to find that all the dishes are still dirty at the end of the cycle. While these appliances are very useful, they too need regular care and maintenance just like any other device or equipment in your home. Here are some tips on caring for your dishwasher:

Scrape the food off, don't just rinse

Pre-rinsing wastes water and affects your detergent's performance. You should remove food from your dishes before starting the dishwasher, but scrape off and then rinse all the debris and food before placing the dishes in the dishwasher. That way the machine hose will have less gunk to deal with and will function more efficiently.

Heat it up

Once you have loaded all the dishes properly, run the faucet until hot water comes out of it. Running hot water through the sink helps reduce pressure on the water heater, which in turn helps bring down the energy costs. Hotter water is more effective in killing bacteria, so it's best not sacrifice hot water in order to save money if you can't run your faucets beforehand.
