Are you an adult struggling with persistent blemishes or hormonal acne that won’t go away? When finding an effective adult acne treatment, you’ve likely tried every face wash, lotion, potion, and serum out there. There’s nothing more frustrating than counting down to adulthood, only to realise your breakouts don’t end when your teen years do. Rest assured, you aren’t alone; many adults struggle with stubborn breakouts.
What Causes Breakouts?
At the root of all acne issues are clogged pores. Your pores are the openings that surround each hair follicle. They are essential to your skin because they also house your sebaceous glands. These glands secrete sebum (oil) through the pore opening, keeping your skin soft and protected, but if the pore gets clogged with dirt, dead skin cells, excess oil, and bacteria, you can end up with a pimple.
Sometimes, sticking to a regular skincare cleansing and exfoliating routine can prevent acne, but for others, the situation is more complicated. Some common causes of adult acne include:
• Hormonal fluctuations
• Pollution
• Using the wrong products
• Cleansing too frequently or intensely
• Specific food sensitivities
• Health conditions
• Genetics
Getting rid of blemishes and breakouts isn’t impossible—it’s about finding the right products that work for you and your skin. Below are some tips for tackling adult acne:
Ditch the Heavily Scented Creams
Indulging in over-the-top skincare, like yummy, scented lotions, is understandable, but some products may do more harm than good (even if they smell delightful). Moisturisers, sunscreens, and makeup products that are too thick and oily may clog pores, resulting in acne. Look for products labelled non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t clog pores, and non-acnegenic, or explicitly formulated not to cause acne. Clean your makeup brushes at least once a week. Simplify your skincare routine by cutting down on products and switching to multitasking products, like a lip enhancement product that contains at least SPF 15 sun protection. You can always ook for products that pull double or triple duty.
Stop Unfavourable Skincare Habits
Adult acne is a perfect reason to stop poor skincare habits, like frequently touching your face, forgetting to remove makeup, sleeping on dirty pillowcases, picking at your pimples, and skipping your face wash. All these things will add debris to your face, blocking the skin’s barrier and putting it in contact with bacteria. Tackle acne-causing bacteria before and after they occur using a salicylic acid cleanser to remove makeup while lightly exfoliating dead skin cells. A fresh, foaming, clarifying salicylic gel cleanser lathers away excess oil, shine, and impurities while gently exfoliating dead skin that can clog pores. Apply to wet face in the morning and evening and massage for one minute. Repeat cleansing for additional exfoliation. If you experience irritation, you can reduce it to once a day.
Consider a Salicylic and Glycolic Combination
In addition to salicylic acid, glycolic acid is an exfoliant that helps remove dead cells from the surface of your skin. Look for salicylic and glycolic acid-containing products to sweep away dead skin. You can find convenient clarifying pads that can be used anywhere (ideal for on-the-go cleansing). Take out one clarifying pad and rub it gently on your face or affected areas.
