4 Things to Know When Building an AR15

Building an AR15 may seem daunting if you have never done it before, but picking out the parts might be the most challenging step in the process. With so many options, it can get overwhelming fast. Whether you are looking to build yourself a Block 2 M4 or want to make something completely your own, here are a few tips to make your first AR build a success.

Choosing a Lower Receiver

Choosing a lower receiver is, essentially, choosing the gun itself. This is, legally, the gun, and the rest is just furniture. The lower is where the trigger and other essential controls are. How it’s made, such as billet or forged aluminum or polymer, or whether it’s Cerakoted or anodized, are all options to consider.

Billet lowers are made from a single piece of metal, while forged receivers are two pieces pressed together. You also need to factor in the caliber, especially if you already have AR mags—make sure they’re compatible. A mag for a 308 AR will be bigger by necessity, as the rounds are bigger than the standard 556 or 223.

Upper Receivers and Handguards

The AR15 upper receiver needs to be the same width as the lower and chambered in the same caliber. It needs to connect to a few important parts, such as the handguard or rail, which is often included as part of the upper receiver group, along with the barrel and the gas system.

Various lengths are available, and AR owners like to debate which is “best.” It all comes down to your preferences and shooting style, and there is no right or wrong barrel length. Finally, consider how you’ll attach your accessories. The two common types are Picatinny rails and M-Lok rails. Once you decide on a system, you’ll need to buy accessory mounts to match.

Find the Right Trigger for You

Triggers can be personal for many shooters, and everyone has their favorite style. Deciding between a curved or flat trigger comes down to your preference, although some shooters claim flat triggers offer a smoother, quicker feel.

You can also get different trigger pulls, often customizable depending on the trigger. There are single-stage, binary, and two-stage triggers, as well as the standard mil-spec. Each has its pros and cons, generally related to how the trigger resets.

Choose Accessories to Fit Your Shooting Style

The most important parts are out of the way, but you aren’t done yet. In fact, the fun is just beginning as you can start to pick out accessories that fit your shooting style. For starters, consider your optics. Add a sight for long-range shooting or a red dot or something similar for shorter-range shooting.

After that, you can add a flashlight, laser, or both with a PEC. These are just a few of the “essential” accessories, but there’s a whole world of aftermarket parts and accessories available for ARs, so you can make your rifle as functional or minimal as you like.
