4 Tips for Testing New Accessories on a Handgun

When you install new Glock accessories, you can fundamentally change your gun. From replacing the slide to installing a new optic, testing out your new parts is essential to understanding how these parts have changed the look, feel, and performance of your gun. Here are some tips to help you evaluate your new upgrades at the range and dial them in.

Zeroing Your Handgun

Your first step, especially after adding Glock parts like a new slide and a red dot, is zeroing your handgun. You don’t need to shoot a perfect group, especially if you aren’t a competition shooter. Instead, you just need to ensure it’s fairly accurate.

For handguns, windage is more important than elevation. Elevation changes at distance, while windage doesn’t change much. Try shooting at about 10 meters into a 1-inch square. The goal isn’t to get into the square, but to be in line with the square. This comes into play when you test at 25 meters. Tweak your zero as you go, and keep testing.

Testing at 25 Meters

Time to take a few steps back and see how your handgun performs from a distance. Your goal is simply to hit a target that is 11 inches tall by 6 inches wide from 25 meters out. That’s the size of an A zone target in a USPSA match and is worth the most points. If you can reliably do that, you can consider your skills tested and your handgun accurate. You may need to tweak your zero, but remember that the most important part is windage.

Practicing Draws

Next, practice your draws. This is especially important if you replaced Glock 43X accessories like the slide, optic, and magazine base plate. The slide and optic completely change the size of the gun, and you might need a new holster. You also don’t want a taller gun to get caught on your shirt as you draw. A mag base plate that extends the length for either more rounds or a better grip can also affect your draw. The key is to get used to how it draws with these new parts installed.

Two-Target Bill Drill

The Bill Drill utilizes multiple targets to help you increase your speed and accuracy. You will need to draw quickly and get a good grip, and this grip can change depending on how you modded your handgun.

The procedure is to have two targets, preferably at slightly different ranges, and on the buzzer, draw and shoot three rounds at the first target. Then, transition to the second target and shoot three more rounds. You can start at 3 or 5 yards out, but the typical drill is 7 yards out. This is a good compromise between distance and draw speed, helping you better determine if your handgun will work well with the new parts.
