Modding or upgrading a firearm is one of the easiest things you can do to take your gun to the next level. Some mods just take a few minutes, while others are more in-depth projects. Even so, plenty of shooters like to mod their guns for different reasons.
Not everyone needs to modify or upgrade their firearms, but there are a few types of shooters who might be interested in swapping out their AR 15 dust cover for something different or adding larger slide and magazine releases to make using the gun easier. Here are four types of shooters who love to mod their guns—which one are you?
The Weekend Shooter
The weekend shooter is busy but tries to make the most of their time by hitting the range on the weekends. Shooting is likely a hobby for them, and they’re trying to improve each weekend.
The weekend shooter’s mods are typically all about convenience and comfort. It could be adding a Glock 43X extended mag floor plate to hold an extra round or two, giving them just a little extra time before they have to stop and reload. Or it could be switching out a butt stock on their AR for one that’s comfier and cushions their shoulder more.
The Competition Shooter
At the other end of the shooting spectrum is the competition shooter. They may go through bulk ammo by the box. Their firearms are likely modded as much as possible to give them every possible advantage in competition.
Because their guns are equipped with upgraded slides, mag releases, triggers, grips, barrels, and other parts, they’re practically unrecognizable compared to stock variants. Weight, accuracy, and reliability are essential for a competitive shooter.
The Customizer
A customizer wants to make their gun unique and 100% theirs. They’ll add a few pops of color by switching out slide and mag releases, changing out a dust cover for one with an image, or using a SIG P365 grip module so it not only looks like it just came from a gunsmith but also provides a better grip.
For the customizer, aesthetics are a key part of modding a gun. It’s not enough to be the best shooter at the range; their gun has to also look the coolest. If it doesn’t look like it was customized by a gunsmith or doesn’t have art on it, it’s not worth showing off at the range. Their gun serves as an extension of their personality, and it stands out in a sea of black rifles and handguns.
The Collector
Some people just love collecting different firearms for the sake of having them. They could be slight variations of the same firearms or vintage WWI bolt-action rifles. If it’s modern guns, chances are they are also going to want to customize them, not unlike the customizer.
While they may keep historic guns stock, they’ll want some unique guns to stand out in their collection. It doesn’t have to be the coolest-looking gun at the range, but it does need to have a signature touch showing it is from their collection.
