5 Firearm Upgrades You Can Do Yourself

Many firearm upgrades are best left to gunsmiths. Getting your shotgun’s stock just right so it fits you perfectly isn’t something that can be easily done at home and requires skill, experience, and the proper tools. Thankfully, there are plenty of upgrades you can do yourself. From replacing your AR 15 dust cover to extending a magazine with a new floor plate, here are a few DIY upgrades to try.

5 Firearm Upgrades You Can Do Yourself

Many firearm upgrades are best left to professional gunsmiths. For example, having your shotgun’s stock reshaped so it fits you perfectly isn’t something that can be easily done at home and requires skill, experience, and the proper tools. Thankfully, there are plenty of upgrades you can do yourself. From replacing your AR 15 dust cover to extending a magazine with a new floor plate, here are a few DIY upgrades to try.

Try a New Grip

Instead of waiting weeks for a gunsmith to revamp your grip, buying something like a SIG P365 grip module can cut the wait time down to days, simply waiting on shipping. You can upgrade the grip on your gun yourself, giving your gun a custom look and better handling.

Replace the Stock Barrel

Whether you want to add threading to your barrel so you can attach a muzzle device or you just want a colorful barrel for a customized look, changing out the barrel on many firearms is fairly easy. It might take you more time to switch out an AR 15 barrel, but it still shouldn’t take you more than an afternoon. For handguns, switching out barrels might only take a few minutes as you really just need to field-strip the pistol.

Swap Dust Covers

Although replacing your AR 15 dust cover is more of a cosmetic upgrade, it only takes a few minutes. You might want a more durable one, but the real upgrade here is giving your rifle a new look. Whether it’s an image that shows off your personality or a funny quote to show off your humor, it’s something that can set your AR 15 apart from all the others at the range.

Expand Your Mag’s Capacity

The standard Glock 43x magazine can only hold 10 rounds, fewer than most other Glocks. While this helps the firearm maintain its smaller footprint, it also means you need to reload more often when firing at the range. Adding a Glock 43x extended mag capacity floor plate only takes a few minutes. Suddenly, your mag holds two more rounds, giving you 12 in total. It may not seem like much on paper, but it will add up over time. Plus, you can pick up capacity extension floor plates in various colors and finishes to match the rest of your custom parts.

Upgrade to a Better Slide

Many handgun slides are mediocre at best out of the box. They can be hard to manipulate due to shallow serrations. This is especially true in the heat of a competition round or when wearing gloves. Switching out slides tends to be pretty easy, and replacing the slide won't take long. You can pick up enhanced slides that feature aggressive cuts and serrations for a better grip and in various finishes and colors to customize the look of your handgun.
