While purchasing coffee from your preferred neighbourhood coffee shop is unrivalled, there are times when you need to be able to make delicious specialty coffee at home. But choosing a coffee brewing method can be difficult given the variety of options available.

Coffee drip method

When making drip coffee, cold water is placed in a reservoir of the coffee maker, where it is heated and pressurised using heat and pressure (you should use filtered water whenever possible). With this pressure, the hot water is sucked through the machine and filtered through the ground. The freshly brewed coffee is then transferred into a carafe after passing through the filter (either a paper filter or an insert from the machine, depending on your device). Viola! Pour some coffee now and enjoy it!

FRENCH PRESS

A metal filter is used to strain coffee grounds in the French press, an immersion brewing technique, allowing oils and undissolved coffee particles to pass into the cup. This process yields a rich, earthy, full-bodied coffee by pressing hot water through ground coffee using a container with a plunger and filter screen. (Tip: Using a medium grind of speciality coffee is the key to making the ideal French press cup.)

SIPHON

A specialised appliance, also known as a vacuum coffee maker, syphon bar, or vac pot, is used to brew syphon coffee. This machine uses two chambers to brew coffee, combining vapour pressure and vacuum to produce a flavorful cup.

ESPRESSO MACHINE

Although there are numerous varieties of espresso machine on the market today, the basic principles of how this brewing technique operates remain the same: pressurised water is forced through a chamber or puck of finely ground coffee beans before passing through a filter. The outcome is the infamous espresso shot.

MOKA POT

The Moka pot might be the ideal choice for you if you want the energy a shot of espresso provides to start your day but don't want to buy an espresso machine!
