Email marketers are constantly concerned about spam traps, spam trigger words, and anti-spam laws. It has become an art to craft targeted emails that will avoid common spam filter triggers and not be marked as spam by your subscribers. Exactly why?

There is a brutal, but justified war being waged by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) against spammers. It is unfortunate that the victims are not always just spammers. Some of us, the good-willed email marketers who lack luck or experience, become collateral damage.

1. Use a unique domain name

If you have a business website, chances are you’re using a free web hosting service like GoDaddy or Bluehost. These companies offer unlimited space for your site, but they also put restrictions on how many email addresses you can use. That means if you want to send out emails to your customers, you need to get a separate email address for each person who wants to receive them. If you’re sending out a lot of emails, this could add up pretty fast.

You don’t have to give up your free web host just because you want to start sending out emails. There are plenty of options out there that let you create custom domains without paying extra. You can find these services at sites like Namecheap and 123-reg.com.

2. Don’t use the same password across accounts

When you sign up for a new account, make sure you use different passwords for each one. If someone gets access to one of your accounts, they won’t necessarily know what the others are. This way, you can keep track of your online activity and prevent any unwanted exposure.

3. Be careful about adding links

Don’t go around posting random links on social media. People might think you’re trying to sell something, and they'll report you for spamming. Instead, try to link to relevant pages on your own site or blog. For example, while working on backlinks and email marketing on my website HaloLuxe, I've to be very careful about linking my website with other website.

4. Make sure your content is optimized

It doesn’t matter how good your website looks if nobody ever sees it. To ensure people do actually visit your site, make sure you optimize your posts for search engines. This includes things like using keywords in titles, descriptions, and tags.

5. Keep your site secure

Make sure you have a strong password policy. Also, consider installing some sort of security software. A firewall is a great option, especially if you run a server.
