8-BIT CHRISTMAS 2021 REVIEW

In late 1989, the Power Glove, a short-lived and infamous cheesy Nintendo Entertainment System attachment, was introduced in North America. “8-Bit Christmas Afdah” is set in “1987 or 1988,” according to brooding narrator Jake (Neil Patrick Harris), although it has a lot of power gloves, the horror of which propels the storyline along. This appears to be a straightforward anachronism. However, it's a typical filmy attitude toward ancient memories, valuing connections above discrepancies. The youthful heroes marketed the 1989 Billy Ripkin flyer card at one time, before moving on to the 1983 hobby “Cabbage Farm Kids.” It's as though the decade's faint recollections had become a vague emotional upheaval.

He doesn't like roller skating rinks, Guinness posters, or Casio watches in “8 Bit Christmas,” a sweet and heartwarming holiday comedy that aired on HBO Max. Director Michael Davis gets terrific, well-known humorous play from his young performers (particularly Max Malass as Jeff, a cute perennial explorer), as well as an unexpectedly rich twist from Steve Jahan, who portrays him and White Lotus. Is betwixt Time is doing one of his greatest performances to yet. The film's central theme is the bond between the loving, kind world and his Nintendo-obsessed son (Winslow Fegle), and their connection is humble and sensitive when they aren't debating the virtues of the 8-bit video game machine. Happens. As well as serenity. Affected. However, the film continues to be sidetracked by reminders of that era, and its boomboxes and trapper keepers get in the way when it can be pushed.
