4WD, or 4-wheel drive, is a term used for vehicles that have the ability to power all four wheels. Most modern cars are equipped with this technology and it has become a common feature in many trucks and SUVs. There are several different types of 4WD systems but they all work the same way: when one wheel loses traction, power is transferred from that tire to other tires on the vehicle which still has grip. An all wheel drive system includes two sets of wheels, one set driven by the engine and another set driven by a different source such as a second engine or electric motor. AWD vehicles are typically 4x4 or 6x6 configurations which provide added ground clearance for offroad use.
