Cost is one of the biggest reasons people put off therapy, and honestly, it's a fair concern. Private therapy in Ontario isn't cheap, and if you don't have benefits — or if your benefits ran out halfway through the year — the price tag alone can be enough to make you close the tab and decide you'll just deal with things on your own for a while longer.
The tricky part is that "dealing with it on your own" rarely works the way we hope it will. Stress, anxiety, relationship strain, or low mood tend to compound over time rather than resolve themselves, and waiting for things to get bad enough to justify the cost usually just means starting therapy from a harder place than you needed to.
The good news is that affordable therapy is more available than most people realize, and it's worth actually asking about before assuming it's out of reach. Many practices, including ours, offer sliding scale or reduced-fee sessions through student therapists working under the supervision of a registered clinical director. These aren't a "lesser" version of therapy — supervision means an experienced clinician is actively involved in your care, reviewing sessions and guiding treatment planning, while you pay a fraction of the standard rate.
It's also worth checking what your insurance actually covers before ruling therapy out. Many extended health plans cover registered psychotherapists, social workers, and psychologists, sometimes for a meaningful number of sessions per year. If you're not sure how to read your benefits, most practices — again, including ours — are used to helping clients figure that out over the phone before they ever book a session.
Beyond the financial piece, affordable doesn't have to mean impersonal. You should still expect to be matched with someone who fits your needs, still expect a warm and structured process, and still expect real progress. The fee structure changes; the quality of care shouldn't.
At Brookhaven Psychotherapy, we offer sliding scale options through our supervised student therapists across our Burlington, Milton, Oakville, and London locations, alongside our full team of registered therapists at standard rates. A free 15-minute consultation is a good place to start — we'll talk through your budget and what you're looking for, and help you find an option that actually works.
