The Atlas Mountains lie between Morocco and Algeria, separating the Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines from the Sahara Desert. These diverse ranges are dotted with Berber villages and riven with canyons. One of the most spectacular mountains in the region is the Toubkal in Morocco's Toubkal National Park. Day 1
On Day 1 of your Atlas mountain trekking adventure, you will leave your accommodations in Marrakech and head to the mountains in southwest Morocco. You will trek through a Berber village and get a 360-degree view of the valley and its surrounding mountains. You will be treated to a delicious Moroccan stew cooked with beef and lots of vegetables. It is a great meal for hiking! Afterward, you will return to your gite and continue your trek to the next Berber village.
Day 2
A 2-day trek through the high Atlas Mountains is an ideal way to experience the culture of the region. The trek includes stops at mountain villages and some amazing sights. The first day of the trek is spent acclimatizing in the Imlil Valley. The hikers will have the opportunity to explore the Berber houses and learn about the traditional lifestyle. Afterwards, they will continue hiking to reach the Aguelzim Pass, which is 3,650 meters high.
Day 3
When is the best time to trek the Atlas Mountains? You can go during the spring or fall, when the weather is most pleasant. Although the mountain region is beautiful all year round, it can be cold in the evenings. For the best weather conditions, you should visit during the green months, from March to November. Then, you can see the snow-covered peaks of the region. The Atlas Mountains are one of the most spectacular places to trek in Morocco.
Day 4
On Day 4, your group will be hiking through the middle Atlas mountains. En route, you will stop in the oasis of Skoura, which is known for its giant kasbahs. Afterward, you'll visit the nearby village of Tiranimine, where you'll be served local snacks and tea. You'll end your trek in a small village where you'll have a local dinner. From there, your group will head back to Marrakech.
Day 5
The day begins with a short drive to Imlil, Morocco, a small village that's nicknamed "Little Chamonix" due to its stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Here you'll sample a delicious Berber stew, which is Moroccan cuisine with beef, loads of vegetables, and a hint of sweetness. It's the perfect hiking food! The rest of the day is spent exploring the local market and hiking through the countryside, where you'll enjoy a delicious Moroccan lunch and dinner.
Day 6
If you are looking for a challenging trek, Atlas mountain trekking may be perfect for you. This 6-day trek includes a number of high alpine passes and stunning campsites. You'll have to climb up the mountain and descend back to the base camp in the evening. This trip is not for the faint-hearted - you must be fit and in good physical shape. The day's trek usually starts at 9:30am and ends at 6pm.
Day 7
You will begin your trek in the morning, and you'll finish the day in Marrakech. On the way, you'll stop for lunch at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, at Le Bohemien. This charming restaurant has stunning views of the surrounding countryside and is a perfect place to unwind after a day of trekking. Then, you'll head to your campsite at the base of the mountain to rest up before tomorrow's trek.
Day 8
Your journey through the Atlas Mountains doesn't end on Day 8. Today, you will hike through the deserts and the gorges to the highest point of the region, Toubkal. The hike to Toubkal takes two to five days. Alternatively, you can choose to climb the summit in four or five days, if you are up for the challenge. You'll also get to explore the vast, remote areas of the high mountains around Lak D'Ifni.
Day 9
On Day 9 of your Atlas mountain trekking adventure, you'll hike to the top of Mount Toubkal, where you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of the region. In the afternoon, you'll have an opportunity to visit a Berber family, who will serve you Moroccan tea and snacks. Afterward, you'll hike through the Dades Valley, where you'll enjoy a picnic lunch and do some light hiking. You'll return to Marrakech by evening.
Day 10
The High Atlas Mountains is an incredible place to visit for hiking. You can choose from more than 28 different treks, and the most popular time to go is October.
