The Sony XPERIA E5 is the least expensive XPERIA smartphone from Sony, but what about the XPERIA XA, another low-priced Sony phone introduced in 2016, and which one is best for you? Here is our XPERIA E5 vs XPERIA XA comparison test.

Sony XPERIA XA and Sony XPERIA E5 - Design and Features:

Both phones look pretty similar on paper, with very little in between in terms of specifications. However, the XPERIA XA has a nicer design with a screen that stands out from other budget blowers. The XPERIA E5, however, has a more straightforward look and feel, though it's still reassuringly sturdy and clearly a Sony phone.

In terms of software, both the XPERIA XA and the XPERIA E5 will feature the latest jazzed version of Android Marshmallow from Sony, featuring funky new icons and a unified design layout from Sony. Both the XPERIA E5 and the XPERIA XA are equipped with a 5-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 720p. However, the XPERIA E5's color palette is warmer, and you will not get XPERIA XA's Super Vivid mode to increase color vibration.

Sony XPERIA XA and Sony XPERIA E5 - Performance and Battery Life:

The XPERIA XA and the XPERIA E5 use an even more basic Mediatek processor with only 1.5 GB of RAM. I've just reviewed the similarly priced Wiley Fox Spark, another Mediatek phone that's been rendered pretty useless by its jarring user experience. After doing our benchmarking tests, I was even more restless. AnTuTu awarded the XPERIA E5 a narrow score of 32,000. This is a big drop in the XPERIA XA 47s.

However, after several days of use, the XPERIA E5 has actually proven to be a serious budget blower. When you try to open an app, there is occasionally a pause, but Android works just fine, as do all the apps I tested. I would not expect anything for £ 99. The XPERIA E5 makes with the Mediatek MT6735 an entry-level 4G chipset, while the MT6755 processor of XPERIA XA is more of a mainstream 4G chipset. However, the XPERIA E5 delivers better performance with less jerking and delay than the XPERIA XA in daily use. It provides a full day of regular use between charges. In contrast, the XPERIA XA tries to make it late into the evening if you are not really holding back.

Sony XPERIA XA and Sony XPERIA E5: cameras

Camera-wide, you get a 13-megapixel snapper on the back of both handsets, which can record full HD video. The XPERIA E5, however, offers a much bigger budget, as the lens has to deal with Sony's built-in object tracking function and the lighting conditions are not optimal. The XPERIA XA is much more reliable and delivers better-looking photos. The XPERIA E5's camera supports image tracking where the lens attempts to focus on a selected subject automatically, but it is a dud of a feature. Moving objects are often lost quickly, and I found that focusing was sometimes even a difficult task when a static scene was shot. As soon as I deactivated the image tracking in the camera settings, the E5 behaved more frequently.

The XPERIA XA also gives you better video results, while the XPERIA E5 struggles with the light and does not stabilize the image. The XA also has a better selfie camera that shakes an 8-megapixel snapper compared to the XPERIA E5's 5-megapixel shooter, though the bottom line does not make a big difference.
