The remote functionality is easy to set up. The display is one of the best we have seen from Sony's XPERIA range, if not the overall market. It comes with a completely new design, although it should be known to anyone who has already seen the Sony XPERIA Z smartphone. It has the same "OmniBalance" look, even thickness and straight edges. The resolution of the display has risen to 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, while running on the tablet Android 4.1.2 on a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro with quad-core, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in memory 18 ounces (1, 13 pounds).
Hardware:
Sony makes a name for itself with its XPERIA hardware design. While we initially feared the XPERIA Tablet Z would be uncomfortable with these sheer nooks and the sheer 6.9-mm profile, the ease of doing so ensures that it's perfectly comfortable in both landscape and portraiture, Each edge is coated with the same lustrous black plastic as the front of the tablet, while the back provides a matte finish - a grip that gives our fingertips a little grip. Except for a few XPERIA trademarks in the center and an icon for the device's NFC permission, there is only one 8.1-megapixel camera that cancels the rear part, which is in the upper-right corner. The second 2.2 megapixel front camera is centered over the screen. Both use Sony's Exmor R sensors - significant improvements over previous Sony tablets.
There are also stereo speakers spread over both lower corners so that the four outputs are almost exactly where your palms enclose the device. If you're worried that audio playback might be compromised, you'd be right, though triune; slow-motion playback means the music actually sounds better when our hands filter it. Maybe the mobile audio capabilities of the HTC One spoiled us, but we had hoped for much better on a tablet.
Despite its sleek silhouette, the XPERIA Tablet Z still delivers everything you expect from a 2013 Android tablet. In addition to 16 GB of memory, there is memory expansion through Micro-SD, FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0, WLAN, an infrared blaster and HDMI via a MHL-compatible micro-USB port. This blaster, located in the middle of the top edge, allows the tablet to be used as a multi-talented remote control.
Display:
Sony's new tablet display is not the highest resolution we've ever seen, but it's great for watching 1080p videos, browsing photos and surfing the web. At this pixel count is the Galaxy Note 10.1 (1280x800) and the Nexus 10 (2560x1600) from Samsung. We spent a lot of time on the differently proportioned screen of the iPad, so we think the widescreen aspect ratio of the XPERIA Z is the better option in many scenarios. Surfing the Internet not only provides a suitable canvas for watching movies, but also offers much more scrolling area - useful for news sites with constantly updating content.
Camera:
Tablets are rarely equipped with the best camera sensors because they are tablets. Sony has integrated at least one of its Exmor R 8-megapixel camera units, but the performance is still average. We were a little disappointed with the noise of several shots, possibly because errors on a resolution screen are more visible to show the entire shot. There are no flashes for darker settings, but automatic white balance makes the colors look right, while Sony's customizable camera interface can be easily configured with the settings you want.
The video recording is also somewhat subversive, with normally overexposed skies and a scrolling effect, which is triggered when the action of the camera exceeds a certain level. These results were very similar to a smartphone from two years ago. So it's likely that we're working with the same sensors here. Although HDR video capture did not make the cut on the tablet, you still have an option for HDR still images. A final twist is the unfortunate positioning of the lens in the upper corner, which seems to be constantly staining.
