Every medico after completing his MBBS degree encounters a question - what next?

There’s a popular misconception that after completing MBBS there aren’t many career options apart from clinical practices and teaching. But that’s not true!

In India, there are several lucrative career options for an MBBS graduate. Even for an OCI or an Indian student who has completed his medical degree abroad there are many different career paths after qualifying the FMGE exam

In this post, our focus is to uncover the plethora of options that are available for a medical graduate after passing the FMGE exam. Once you familiarize yourself with the options, it will be easier to choose according to your interest. Read on.

MD/MS/Diploma

For those who wish to continue their medical career, gaining MD/MS/Diploma is an ideal option. Post-graduate doctors are highly regarded in India and can easily practice medicine across the country.

You will have the option to obtain a Post-Graduation in various specialties like general surgery, gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and many more. To get admission, in a reputed post-grad college, a candidate must appear in various PGMEE which are held every year.

After qualifying the entrance exam, you can enroll in MD/MS, which is a 3-year degree course. Alternatively, you can also pursue a diploma, which is a 2-year program. MD/MS prepares you as a specialist doctor which is a need of the hour for always.

Diplomate of National Board (DNB)

Apart from the regular post-graduate degrees, Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is another amazing option for MBBS graduates who dream of becoming a specialist doctor. DNB is a PG diploma course offered by NBE i.e. National Board of Examinations, and it is recognized by the MCI.

However, you must be warned of the downsides associated with pursuing DNB. First off, the passing rate is comparatively lower and also depends on your course and the hospital you are doing it from. Also, the DNB course is mostly available in private hospitals, which means it’s highly likely that candidates might get lesser exposure as compared to Government hospitals. In addition to that, many hospitals prefer candidates that hold a MD/MS degree.

Combined Medical Services (CMS) or Civil Services

Combined Medical Services exam is the path to choose if you fancy a government job in institutions like Railways or Municipal Corporations. UPSC conducts the screening exam for CMS every year in July/August. The eligibility for appearing in the CMS exam is clearing the MBBS program.

Just like the CMS exam, MBBS graduates are also eligible for the civil services exam, which is one of the most honored services of the nation. After qualifying the civil services candidates can join the IRS/IAS/ IFS/IPS. The exam is conducted by UPSC every year. Only downside to this career option is that you will lose touch with the medical side of your learning as there will be no patient dealing.

Upon clearing either of these exams you get to be a part of the administrative workforce of the hospital, which offers reputation and stability both.

MBA

With the increase in demand of medical professionals in private hospitals and big pharmaceutical companies, MBA has become a preferred course for higher education. There are several reputed MBA institutions that are absorbing doctors in their programs. Institutes like FMS Delhi, IIM’s, MDI Gurgaon, IBS Hyderabad, XLRI Jamshedpur are some of the top colleges in India that offer MBA programs to medical students after they make it to the merit list of CAT exam.

Clinical Research

Those who are more inclined toward academics instead of practicing medicine can also make an excellent career in clinical research. While research in India is a less preferred option, there is an immense need and demand for knowledgeable personnels in this field. Many institutes offer research opportunities like ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research), CCMB (Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology), CIMAP, St. John’s Research Institute.

Those who are passionate about clinical research can also join the WHO. Many institutes lik PGI, AIIMS, NIMHANS, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (TIFR) even offer a degree in Ph.D.

Masters in Health Administration (MHA)

For those who aspire to manage big specialty hospitals, or their own practice, MHA is a great option. It is a 3-year Post-Graduate degree (M.D.) in Health Administration that enables medical students to acquire the skills needed to work in big specialty hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, etc.
