Radiant heat offers many benefits. It is incredibly cozy to walk on heated floors in winter. It will be a delight for your dog to lay on. Radiant heat can also be very cost-effective.

Some flooring options are better than others if you consider installing radiant heat. These top four flooring options can be used over radiant heat.

1. Tile Flooring

Ceramic tile and porcelain tiles are excellent heat conductors, so radiant heating will be a great option for your home. Tile flooring does not shrink or contract when it heats up and will not expand or contract when it cools down. Cracking can result from such expansion and contraction. This is not an issue with tile.

2. Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring can replicate the look of tile or solid hardwood flooring without cost. It is also superior to radiant heat. The laminate material comprises layers of wood that run in opposite directions. This makes laminate material more durable than solid hardwood. Laminate won't shrink or contract like solid hardwood flooring wood.

3. Engineered wood flooring

It is made in layers like laminate. This gives it a stable base that doesn't react to heating or cooling. The wear layer is solid wood and can be found in the same variety as solid hardwood flooring. Engineered flooring is also available in bamboo. It looks great, feels great, and is warm.

4. Natural Stone Flooring

Granite, travertine, and sandstone are excellent at transferring heat. Stone can be perceived as cold, but it is warm when warm water is underneath it. Radiant heat is something you might not have considered if you don't think you would like to walk on stone flooring naked-footed in January.

5. Vinyl plank flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring, especially wood-look vinyl plank flooring, is trendy. With the introduction of rigid core technology, most vinyl planks and tiles can now be used for underfloor heating.

You should always check the installation instructions for each product. The warranty will often specify the maximum temperature at which the vinyl plank can be used.

What flooring should not be used over radiant heat?

But what about the reverse question? What flooring is not recommended for radiant heat? Carpet has an insulation value that will stop some heat from getting into your home. While you can place a few area rugs over the flooring, avoid using large rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting.

Vinyl flooring is also not a good option. Vinyl flooring can be discolored by heat or off-gassing chemicals. Solid hardwood flooring can shrink and swell with heating and cooling, especially in winter homes with humidifiers. It is not worth spending on expensive hardwood flooring that will buckle, crack, or crown.

You have several options for radiant heating that will provide comfort and efficiency: tile, laminate, engineered flooring, natural stone flooring, and engineered flooring.
