I was going to do commentary while reading this book but decided against it. I really enjoyed Simon VS The Homo-Sapiens Agenda. It was a cute book. I don't get Owl Crate so I had to either purchase this book which I can't because I'm poor or I had to check it out from the library. The library had it so I was able to check it out and boy am I glad I did.
I guess I had high expectations when it came to this book. Sadly I was disappointed. I'm just going to have random thoughts while I type this up so I might go all over the place. I don't have a photographic memory and I'm glad about that since there are some things you just don't want to remember. I'm all for diversity in books but unpopular opinion I only think it should be done by authors who can do it justice. There's diversity in this book but it almost felt like there was too much of it.
Molly is fat so that's great. It is nice to see some fat rep. I really wanted to love her but I didn't although I could relate to her on some levels. She meets Mina in the bathroom of a club. The toilet paper ran out so she asks Mina for some. After that the bathroom meeting leads to Molly wanting to set up her twin with this girl who was wearing the right shirt that helped her decide that Cassie and Mina were written in the stars. They end up meeting at the train station and Mina starts going on about Molly saving her labia. Bitch you wouldn't have died if Molly didn't give you toilet paper. What's up with that? There begins a long stream of labia this and vag block that. Really? Going to a yogurt shop with your sister means you're trying to get in on the potential girlfriend action despite Molly being straight? What? You could possibly die of alcohol poisoning if you took a shot any time one of those words was said.
I know some people complained about the swearing. I'm totally fine with swearing but it was a bit strange that the girls were comfortable with using the F word in front of their parents. Sure I've used curse words in front of my parents but the word fuck never happened That just seems odd and what's with the dick obsession? Penis pancakes and dog penis lipstick. What the fuck? It was a little strange but all relationships between kids and parents aren't the same so maybe there are parents out there that act this way. I really don't know. I just found it a bit cringe worthy. I thought it was great that gay marriage becoming legal was added to the story but in a way it just seemed like it was there to tick off some checklist. It was there and yes the moms got married but it wasn't until eighty percent of the way through the book that I really started enjoying myself which is why I gave it 2.5 stars instead of 1.5 or maybe 2 stars.
I get Molly being in her head a lot. What I didn't like was Cassie and the way she treated Molly. Molly was a doormat. Clearly she wasn't comfortable in her skin. I also didn't like that getting a guy would make everything hunky dory. I think there could have been a great opportunity to have Molly figure out that she's ace. She had crushes but she didn't seem to be in any rush to get into a relationship. It wasn't until Cassie started dating Mina that it was decided that Molly must get a boyfriend and that boyfriend must be Mina's best friend Will. I didn't like Will. I thought he was an asshole. Mina's pansexual but apparently everyone in this world knows what that means. Why couldn't this have been used as a teaching moment to explain a sexuality that many people might not be aware of? Nope everyone just knew what it was. Mina should have been fleshed out more but she was very flat and seemed to be there to add some diversity.
I didn't hate Molly but I didn't love her like I thought I would. She gets a summer job and for some crazy reason despite it being summer Cassie would often wake up Molly. Bitch sleep in. Also stop being a bitch to your sister. They acted like Molly being seventeen and unkissed was literally the end of the world. Let her get there at her own speed. She works at this store and meets a boy. She's judging him because he's a nerd. I do end up liking the relationship with Reid but I didn't like how Molly was forced into wanting a relationship that she might not have been ready for until it happened in a natural sort of way. I only really liked the last twenty percent of the book and the only reason I know the percentages is because I got the ebook. How do people know the percentages when they are holding up a physical book? Do they look it up? I can't tell. I maybe could tell him I'm about halfway through a book but nothing else unless I was finished with the book. I also hated that Molly found it cool to be called a slut. Really? What the fuck?
