Fractures could be serious especially when they occur due to high-impact trauma like a vehicle accident or falling from a height. Such injuries could complicate the situation and make the treatment difficult. One of the most difficult fractures to treat is broken ribs. The reason behind this is conventional methods like casting and surgery using orthopedic trauma implants cannot be used for the treatment. For example, casting ribs could cause complications like breathing difficulty especially during deep breathing. In this post, we will discuss broken ribs in detail about broken ribs.

What Happens in the Case of Broken Ribs?

As the name suggests, broken ribs are the condition where one or more ribs get fractured and the reason for this could be trauma or a fall from height. Ribs could either get broken completely or a slight crack is seen. This completely depends upon the extent of impact & the cause.

The most commonly reported cases are cracks in rib(s) due to chest trauma. Such conditions do cause pain, but they are not as dangerous as a broken rib(s).

What Are the Causes of Broken Ribs?

Chest trauma is the main cause of broken ribs and it results due to automobile accidents, a great height fall, and contact sports injuries. If trauma occurs due to low impact, bruising of ribs may occur. Ribs can also break when something heavy falls on them.

Excessive coughing and strenuous activities are the least common causes of rib injuries.

How Broken Rib Injuries Are Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of the condition starts with a physical examination where the doctor gently presses or rubs on the ribs to identify painful areas. Plus, he/she will also listen to the sound while you breathe and watch the rib cage in the process. Besides this, you will also be asked certain questions about the cause and symptoms. After going through all this, the doctor would order certain tests to confirm the extent of injury that occurred. The tests ordered may include:

X-ray to detect rib fractures and collapsed lungsCT scan when x-ray fails to provide a conclusive reportMRI to confirm damage to surrounding tissues and organsBone scans to identify a stress fracture

How Broken Rib Injuries Are Treated?

Though the treatment of rib injuries is difficult, yet it is seen that they tend to heal within six weeks to two months depending upon the severity of the condition. If the injury is mild, it might heal quicker than in serious cases. As surgical treatment and casting cannot be used in case of rib fractures, the doctor prescribes other forms of treatment to bring the condition under control. Treatment may include:

Medication

Medication is prescribed to provide relief from pain. When it hurts to breathe deeply, the person may develop pneumonia. In certain cases, oral drugs fail to provide any relief, and hence, the doctor will recommend intravenous injections.

Therapy

Breathing exercises may also be prescribed by the doctor once the pain is eradicated. The goal of such exercises is to help the patient breathe deeply. This is because shallow breathing can increase the risk of developing pneumonia.

To avoid developing serious complications, it is necessary to consult the doctor in time.
