Erectile Dysfunction is a condition or an inability when a male finds himself unable to get or keep an erection stiff enough for sexual intercourse. However, it doesn’t impact the ability to have an orgasm.

Its Symptoms

Problem in getting an erection.Decreased libido.Problem maintaining an erection.

Sometimes, it is common for a man to face problems with erections. But if erectile dysfunction occurs often, it depicts underlying health concerns.

ED Can Occur If:

The limited blood flow in the penis or nerve gets damaged.Due to stress or emotional causes.Dealing with ongoing health conditions like atherosclerosis, heart disease, high blood pressure and high blood sugar or Diabetes.

So, Other health concerns have a link up with ED. To cure erectile dysfunction, Doctors put emphasis basically on the causes of the concern before treatment.

What Are The Causes of Erectile Dysfunction?

Sometimes, it is common for a man to face problems with erections. But if erectile dysfunction occurs often, it depicts underlying health concerns. Let’s move forward and get valuable insight into what basically are the causes of Erectile Dysfunction.

Endocrine System Disease

Our body’s endocrine system releases hormones controlling metabolism, sexual function, reproduction, and mood, like functions in the body. Diabetes is one such endocrine disease that lets you face impotence. It impacts the body’s ability to utilise the hormone insulin.

Other concerns linked with chronic diabetes are nerve damage. This affects sensation in the penis. Other complications linked with diabetes hinder blood flow and hormone levels. Both these can lead to impotence.

Medication and Treatment

Several medications can obstruct the blood flow to the penis. As per reports, about 25% of men facing problems with erectile dysfunction are having problems because of the medication they consume. However, ED is the reason for men to stop taking drugs for conditions like High blood pressure and depression.

Some medications and treatments that can trigger the risk of impotence are -

Cancer Chemotherapies like Myleran and Cytoxan.Radiation exposure to the pelvis region while cancer treatment might have caused injuries leading to dysfunction.High blood pressure medications, especially diuretics like Microzide and beta-blockers like Inderal XL (propranolol)

Psychological Issues (Stress & Anxiety)

Anxiety or stress hinders the ability to attain an erection. This might be happening all because of a past sexual experience or a previous appearance of ED. Likewise, if a man and his partner encounter relationship trouble, it can have an adverse impact on sexual activity.

Injury

If accidently, some injury happens to nerves, veins, or arteries of the pelvis region can trigger sexual concerns. Chances increased for the men with an increased rate of ejaculation or erectile problems. However, spinal cord injuries don't surely impact sexual function. Some people with complete spinal cord experience changes in libido and the ability to orgasm. Hence sexual arousal desire can still be affected after trauma or injury.

Hypertension

An erection relies on the proper blood flow to the penis. Since any medical concern impacting the heart and any cardiovascular structure pose an influence on penile function.

Specifically, this happens in case of high blood pressure. However, scientists don't have an exact statement to support how this can cause ED. As per one theory, high arterial pressure penis’s small vessel may bring minuscule tears to the vessel walls. In an effort to fill up these tears, the arteries grow thicker and so are less able to transmit the needed blood to the erectile tissue of the penis.

Other Potential Causes Involving

Reduced Hormone production

Increasing pressure in the cardiovascular system influences the production of several hormones, especially those that manage sexual drive and erection response. Some data shows that men with High blood pressure have low sperm count and testosterone levels as compared to men with normal blood pressure.

Low level of Nitric Oxide

Studies have revealed that men with prolonged hypertension may have less nitric oxide ( an agent that enables blood vessels to relax or dilate). A person may suffer from erectile dysfunction when there is not adequate nitric oxide to completely relax blood vessels and enable the blood to fill up the penis.

Venous Leaks

To attain an erection, blood is required to be supplied to and remain in the penis. Research says that men with high blood pressure may have problems sustaining an erection because the escalating pressure pushes the blood out of the erectile tissues and veins of the penis. In this, the push to the small closing valves of veins is more powerful than veins potential to cease. This means the veins can’t close tightly enough to restrict blood from coming out of the penis.

Diabetes And Other Concerns

Erectile dysfunction hardly occurs alone. It is usually a result of two or more health conditions simultaneously. Here’s how!

A long-time patient with diabetes is more likely to develop ED in case the blood glucose level has not been well-controlled. Side effects accompanying the conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol are key factors in impotence. When a diabetic person smokes, it increases the chances of developing ED. Heart disease and diabetes are usually linked to each other because coronary artery injury is a complication of diabetes also.

Coronary artery disease can impact sexual function on its own. People are likely to face ED nine times more who are suffering from both coronary artery disease and diabetes compared to diabetes alone. Erectile dysfunction is common in both coronary artery disease and diabetes, so it could be regarded as a risk factor.
