CLAT UG Eligibility Criteria: Everything You Need to Know

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the most prestigious law entrance exam in India for undergraduate aspirants who wish to secure admission to the top National Law Universities (NLUs). Before beginning your CLAT preparation journey, it's essential to understand the eligibility criteria set by the Consortium of NLUs.

1. Basic Eligibility for CLAT UG

CLAT UG is open to students who have completed or are appearing in the final year of their 10+2 (Senior Secondary) examination. The exam is primarily for students who want to pursue a 5-year integrated undergraduate law course (like BA LL.B., BBA LL.B., etc.) offered by participating NLUs. It is important to note that only Indian nationals, NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs are eligible to apply.

2. Educational Qualification

Candidates must have passed their 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognized board. Those appearing in the qualifying examination in the same year as the CLAT exam are also eligible to apply, provided they can produce proof of passing the qualifying exam at the time of admission.

3. Minimum Marks Required

  • General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI candidates: Must have scored at least 45% marks in their 10+2 or equivalent exam.
  • SC/ST candidates: Must have secured a minimum of 40% marks.

If the board provides grades/CGPA, students should convert these into percentage marks based on the board's guidelines.

4. Age Limit

As per the latest guidelines, there is no upper age limit for candidates applying for CLAT UG. This decision by the Supreme Court and the Consortium has opened the door for older candidates or those considering a career shift into law.

5. Eligibility for NRI and Foreign Nationals

Some NLUs have a few seats reserved for NRI, NRI-sponsored, PIO, OCI, or Foreign National candidates. While these candidates may be required to apply directly to the respective NLUs, many of them also require the CLAT score as part of the admission process. Interested candidates should visit individual NLU websites for specific guidelines.

6. Tie-Breaking Criteria in Eligibility

In the case of equal marks scored by two or more candidates in CLAT UG, the Consortium applies tie-breaking rules for seat allotment:

  • Higher scores in the Legal Reasoning section
  • Older age of the candidate
  • Random draw of lots, if needed

This makes it even more important to focus on Legal Reasoning during your preparation.

7. Documents Required at the Time of Admission

Candidates must keep the following documents ready for admission:

  • 10th and 12th marksheets and certificates
  • Transfer/migration certificate
  • CLAT Admit Card and Score Card
  • Caste certificate (if applicable)
  • Domicile/residency certificate (if seeking state quota)
  • Passport-size photos

Failure to produce valid documents will result in disqualification even if the CLAT exam is cleared.

8. Important Notes for Appearing Candidates

If you're appearing in your Class 12 board exams the same year as CLAT, you are allowed to sit for the exam. However, you must:

  • Ensure you meet the minimum marks criteria by the time of admission
  • Submit the required documents within the specified time frame

Failing to do so may lead to cancellation of provisional admission.

9. Reservation Policies in NLUs

Every NLU has its own reservation criteria based on state domicile, caste, and special categories. The Consortium does not set a uniform reservation policy. Make sure to check the official website of each NLU you're applying to in order to understand their specific reservation rules and required documents.

10. Mistakes to Avoid in CLAT Eligibility

  • Don’t assume eligibility without checking board-specific criteria.
  • Failing to convert grades to percentages accurately.
  • Waiting till the last date to collect required certificates.
  • Not checking NLU-specific admission procedures, especially if you're an NRI or applying under reserved categories.

Final Thoughts

Understanding the eligibility criteria is the first and most crucial step in your CLAT journey. Many students lose their chance due to simple mistakes like overlooking minimum marks or failing to submit documents on time. Stay informed, double-check your qualifications, and always follow the official guidelines issued by the Consortium.

The path to your dream NLU starts with awareness. Be clear, be prepared, and take every step strategically.

Thanks for reading! Best of luck for your CLAT preparation journey.
