The history of the waterfall is associated with a sad legend. Long before the arrival of the Spaniards, the land of Sierra Tarahumara was ruled by a powerful leader, Candamena, and he had a daughter, Basaseachi, in whom the leader doted. It's time to marry the girl off. Many husbands asked for the hand of the beautiful Basaseachi, but the jealous father still could not find a groom worthy of a bride. In the end, Candameña staged a tournament, putting the challengers to the hardest tests. Only four suitors were able to cope with them, but they all died in the last most terrible battle. The inconsolable Basaseachi threw herself into the abyss, and the local shaman turned the girl's falling body into a stream of water. The heartbroken father disappeared, however, according to rumors, his soul still roams the canyon in search of the body of his beloved daughter.
