5 Indie Games to Play if You Like the Persona Series
The Persona series is known for putting a lot of gameplay elements into one big JRPG story, and some indie games have the same gameplay elements.

Persona 5's characters.
The Persona series is a JRPG with a lot going on. It has school life, palace dungeons, relationships, calendar days, and a story about mementos and personas that are connected to people's hearts. The series is unique in how much it juggles at once, but games like Tokyo Xanadu and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore are similar.

But there aren't many indie games like Persona, and the ones that are similar tend to focus on specific gameplay elements from Persona rather than trying to do everything at once. Indie games can be defined in different ways. They can be made by a small development team, with a small budget, by a single person, by an independent publisher, by a studio that isn't influenced by a publisher, or with indie logic that is different from AAA game standards. Many of these definitions are used in the following titles.

CrossCode is an action RPG that was first released on Windows in 2018 and most recently on the PS5 in 2021. It takes place in a made-up MMORPG with a main character who has lost his memory and can't speak. It was made by Radical Fish Games, and it was actually crowdfunded. The game has been compared to both Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana.

The combat moves faster than in Persona, and it is a sci-fi game. It is similar to the Persona series in that it has a lot of different kinds of enemies, a story-driven structure, and interesting characters. Some Steam reviews say that it's easy to care about the characters and that the story is as dense as Persona. In other words, it also has a lot of different things to do and places to explore.

Up to the Moon

This psychological drama, made by Freebird Games and designed by Kan Gao using RPG Maker XP, is about two doctors who try to make a dying man's wish come true. They try to do it in a very Persona-like way by giving him fake memories.

Like the characters of Persona, the ones in To The Moon use "mementos" to look into someone's heart. Story-wise, there are some clear similarities, but other than that, the game is very different from Persona, since there is no fighting or school life.

Legrand Legacy

Legrand Legacy is a JRPG made by Semisoft and published by Another Indie. It is playable on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It's basically a nostalgic love letter to JRPGs, and like Persona, it has turn-based battles. NPCs can be hired, and they offer benefits that are similar to Persona's social features.

The story is about Finn, who is the leader of a group of travelers. Like in CrossCode, the main character has lost their memory. Unlike Persona, this JRPG takes place in a fantasy setting during a civil war. Final Fantasy and The Legend of Dragoon were big influences on Legrand Legacy.
