David Beckham and Gary Neville support Sir Alex Ferguson at funeral of legend's wife

Manchester United alumni David Beckham and Gary Neville were among those in attendance for Lady Cathy Ferguson's funeral on Monday in a show of support for their old boss Sir Alex

The Manchester United family came together on Monday in tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson's late wife, Cathy.

David Beckham, Gary Neville and Park Ji-Sung were just some of the ex-manager's former charges who showed up for Cathy's funeral at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Glasgow. Ferguson's wife of 57 years died earlier in October as tributes poured in for Ferguson's long-term partner.

Other Old Trafford alumni present for the ceremony included Nicky Butt, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick, along with older favourites like Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce. Former Premier League managers Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers were also on hand to pay their respects at the service, which was overseen by Canon Andrew McKenzie.

Following the service, Ferguson followed the coffin out before saying his goodbyes and departing. Police watched over proceedings from across the street, with two stood to attention near a police van in case they were needed.

Beckham, Neville and Park were pictured outside the venue on Monday afternoon, with the former smiling on a sad day for the club. The Sun reported Beckham chatted with fellow attendees after the service before being picked up by a black Mercedes.

Beckham, Neville, and Bruce were also seen leaving their hotel as they made their way to the service. Bruce was seen interacting with his former Hull City charge and injured Scotland full-back Andy Robertson as he departed for St. Andrew's, though the Liverpool star was not attending the funeral.

"Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy,' read a Man United statement when news of Cathy's death first emerged.

"Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career."

Beckham described Ferguson's late wife as "an incredible person" and someone he and his old team-mates 'looked up to'. The 48-year-old led the tributes to Cathy when news of her death emerged.

He told Sky Sports at the time: “Obviously deepest sympathies go to the boss because to have Cathy by his side for a long, long time, got many, many years to be the strength that he needed through his career and through his life, it’s a really sad time for him and his family and the grandkids, so we obviously send our love to him.

Ferguson confirmed his intentions to spend more time with Cathy and the rest of his family was a driving motivation in his decision to step down from United's helm in 2013, having led the club for 27 years. He said at the time: “I think a lot of the time, for 47 years, she’s been the leader of the family, looked after our three sons and sacrificed herself for me."
