There are many different types ofpost-arrest drug tests. Some involve a simple saliva test where thesuspect swabs their tongue at the police station or right beforeturning in for the night. This drug test may not accurately detectrecent use because some people hold their tongues for weeks or evenmonths after ingesting cannabis. However, the saliva drug test isstill effective in detecting recent use. The most common cannabistesting that police use is the urine drug test. This type of test istypically performed right on the spot (as soon as the suspect isbooked) and is relatively accurate. Because cannabis urine testing isgenerally considered to be more sensitive than saliva testing. Urinecannabistesting can alsoreveal more chronic drug use, such as past use of heroin or opiates.
A newer form of post-arrest drugtesting uses hair samples. A recent study shows that hair drugtesting can provide very accurate results with high levels ofreliability. Hair is considered a "clean" sample because itis not contaminated by saliva or blood, so it is more likely toreveal significant amounts of cannabis. Hair testing is moresensitive than urine drug testing and therefore may be requestedimmediately following arrest. This test can also be used to detectrecent hair loss or to confirm the identity of a person who hasrecently been lost. Hairs can be tested on a person who has longsince gone missing.
