DNA Profiling: Understand the Process and Applications!

4 min read

The abbreviation of DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid, a molecule that is not only found in humans but also in almost all living organisms. It plays a crucial role as it contains the genetic instructions necessary for the development and functioning of these organisms. DNA's structure can be thought of as a twisted ladder, also known as a double helix. It comprises four nucleotides: bases—adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine. These nucleotides are the building blocks of DNA and their sequence in DNA defines the basic genetic makeup of our body. They are responsible for inheriting traits from one generation to the next.

DNA Profiling or DNA fingerprinting is now widely used in various fields, including forensic science, genetic susceptibility to certain diseases, paternity, and other relationship testing. Are you curious about this test process and its applications? Stay tuned!

Understand the Process of DNA Profiling Testing

DNA Profiling Tests has many steps, including:

Sample Collection: A small sample containing DNA is collected from the individual. This could be blood, semen, saliva , hair, teeth, bone, tissue and cells.DNA Extraction: The DNA is extracted from the sample using various methods to isolate it from other cellular components.Polymerase Chain Reaction (PRC): PCR is used to make copies of specific regions of the DNA. This step amplifies the DNA, making it easier to analyze.Gel Electrophoresis: The amplified DNA fragments are separated by size using a technique called gel electrophoresis. An electric current passes through a gel matrix, causing the DNA fragments to move based on size.Laser Analysis: After the DNA fragments are separated, they undergo examination using laser technology. A laser beam is directed at the DNA, and a detector captures the unique fluorescence patterns emitted as a result. Every individual's DNA generates a distinct pattern of bands, forming a personalized genetic blueprint.

Applications

Peace of Mind: it is used by the general public to identify biological relationships such as paternity, maternity, siblingship, grandparent, etc. This is the most used DNA testing application, providing accurate and reliable results.

Cell Line Authentication: Cell line authentication is a crucial process  in research and experiments, helping to identify contamination and misidentification. It is widely used in medical research, especially in research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology companies.

Immigration DNA Test: Immigration DNA tests are another important use of DNA profiling, which many people use for immigration purposes. When the petitioner and beneficiary's primary documents don't prove them biologically related. In those cases this test helps to identify their biological relationship.

Organ Transplant Test (As Per THOA, 2014): According to THOA (The Transplantation of Human Organs Act) 2014, a DNA profiling test is mandatory in cases where the recipient and live donors are closely related. We offer precise and reliable DNA tests for organ transplant procedures along with Form-5 to ensure speedy transplantation.
