Do Bike Helmets Expire or Go Bad?

Do you always use a helmet when riding a bike? Answer: probably not, at least according to four out of every five readers. That is a fact that must be altered.

Helmets for cyclists save lives and shield users from harm. Using the safety equipment is thought to be the most reliable method of avoiding head and brain damage if you ever fall from your two-wheeler.

Although bicycle helmets are durable, they do not last forever. With each sweaty mile you pedal, materials gradually deteriorate over time. It also matters where you store your helmet and how you maintain it.

According to manufacturer recommendations, bicycle helmets should be replaced five to ten years after purchase, if not sooner.

Replacements should also be bought if you notice indications of:

1.Cracks in the Shell or Liner:

Because it's possible that a helmet that's been in a major fall or accident may have structural damage that isn't obvious, such a helmet should not be used.

2.A Crushed or Cracked Foam Liner:

Some foam liners are made to withstand a single, powerful impact. They won't perform the same protective function twice, similar to an airbag in a car.

3.Worn-Out Straps:

Strap the helmet down securely is a bit problematic. Replacing straps also isn’t advised.

“The industry is constantly improving, so if you have an older helmet, odds are, there is better technology available now,” says dr. Waters.
