Earth Rod
In order to achieve satisfactory earthing systems in overhead and underground electricity distribution and transmission networks - providing high fault current capacity on low, medium, and high voltage substations, towers, and power distribution applications - Earth Rods and their fittings are used to provide the interface to ground in all soil conditions.
The earth rod or group of copper rods can be easily installed when the subsurface is devoid of rocks and boulders by surrounding them or backfilling them with a low resistance earthing material, such as bentonite.
The Solid earth rod can be specified to achieve safe, dependable, and long-term earthing protection depending on the corrosion and electrical conductivity of the ground condition. The mechanical strength of the rod must withstand the abrasion and stress endured during installation with an electric or pneumatic driving rod hammer; the head of the earth rod should not "mushroom" or spread when driven.
The copper couplers provided by the rod couplers give permanent electrical conductivity, while the longer copper earth rods reach lower resistance soils at lower depths. The earth rods are made by AN Wallis and are extensible by design.
When a layer of high soil resistance exists on top of a low soil resistivity ground condition through which the rod may penetrate, vertically driven earth rods are the most efficient electrode. These electrodes are commonly used in small area substations.
It's a frequent fallacy that the diameter of the earth rod utilised and the impact on decreasing earth resistance readings are directly and positively correlated.
When connecting and combining more driven earth rods, they should be kept apart from each other and from any nearby cables by a distance that is at least as great as the depth to which they are driven. Copper tape or bare copper cable with the same cross sectional area as the earth electrode conductor should be used to connect additional earth rods. Placement of the extra electrodes should preserve any necessary separation between the LV and HV earth electrode systems.
