Fiery Folklore: Debunking 5 Common Sun Myths

Ah, summer. There’s nothing like frolicking on the sand or lounging poolside with a book and tropical drink nearby. While the warmth from the sun can feel magnificent, it is essential to remember the dangers of sun exposure. The arrival of summer means the annual re-circulation of these common sun myths listed below.

Myth 1: A Base Tan Is Necessary Before Vacation

Many people think they need to get a “base tan” to avoid sunburn on vacation, but this is a big mistake. While a tan may look nice, it is evidence of sun damage and should be avoided. So that “healthy” tan you’re striving for today may lead to irreversible skin damage in the future. To prevent this, always wear sunscreen—even on overcast, cloudy days and wear sun protection women’s clothing.

Myth 2: Covering with Clothing Is Always Enough

You may have heard that any clothing will block the sun’s rays, but that’s not entirely true. The type of clothing you wear matters in terms of sun safety. A white T-shirt offers an approximately UPF 5 rating equivalent, which doesn’t add much protection. Instead, look for SPF clothing for women with a UPF 50+ rating, the highest available, which blocks 98% of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Complete your sun safe look with a UPF 50+ hat, sunglasses and sunscreen before heading outside for summer fun.

Myth 3: You Don’t Need Sun Protection on Cloudy Days

If you look out the blinds, see clouds and assume you can skip sunscreen or sun protective clothing because the sun isn’t out, that is false. Protecting your skin even if it’s not sunny outside is essential. On cloudy days, up to 90% of the sun’s rays can still penetrate your skin, so always take precautions, even on dark, dreary days.

Myth 4: You Need Sun Exposure or Tanning for Vitamin D

If you live in a colder northern state where the sun tends to be limited in the winter months, you may have been told to sit in a tanning bed or run outside as soon as the sun peeks out to keep your vitamin D levels where they need to be. Unfortunately, this is also bad advice, as there is no reason to damage your skin and put yourself at risk simply to boost your vitamin levels. You can reach adequate vitamin D levels through proper diet and supplementation without harming the skin.

Myth 5: Sun Protective Clothing Isn’t Stylish

The modern era of sun protective clothing has made great strides in providing stylish, comfortable fashions you want to wear. Plus, many pieces are highly versatile, so you can wear a cover up dress as a bathing suit cover, an everyday dress or even a tunic paired with leggings or linen pants. A stylish swim skirt can go from the beach to the golf course or tennis courts to running errands without skipping a beat. While sun protective clothing might have left much to be desired in the past, now you can find all sorts of modern, chic options. You can find stunning fashionable pieces with vibrant colors, preppy patterns and flattering silhouettes that make you feel confident and chic.
