What an energizing (pun intended)  time at CERAWeek by S&P Global here in the energy capital of the world, Houston, Texas! The annual event was held March 7-11 at the Hilton Americas—Houston. It was fascinating to hear views on the current energy climate from U.S. Senators, prominent senior executives, eminent scholars, and other thought leaders from around the globe.

An Opportunity to Share Transformative Technology

A portion of CERAWeek called the Innovation Agora was dedicated to technology and innovation programming. Drawing from a community of thought and technology leaders, academics, energy company members and others, the Innovation Agora showcased transformational technology platforms in the energy space ranging from digitalization, artificial intelligence, and analytics to robotics, blockchain, and decarbonization. This year, dedicated “Agora Hubs” were added to focus on hydrogen and carbon management.

I was privileged to speak in an Innovation Agora Pod on March 9, addressing “More Energy, Lower Emissions.” Zahroof StraightFlo™ compressor valves were the focus of my presentation. With the large numbers of reciprocating compressors in all sectors of the energy industry, StraightFlo™ valves are making an increasingly substantial contribution to increased compressor productivity, reliability, and run times while reducing maintenance and inventory costs. StraightFlo™ valves have gained a reputation as the “ESG Valve” (environmental social, and governance) due to their unique ability to improve compressor efficiency and reduce emissions, noise, and vibration.

My Observations About CERAWeek 2022

Billed as the world’s preeminent energy conference, this year marked the 40th anniversary of CERAWeek. The theme, “Pace of Change: Energy, Climate and Innovation,” was chosen to examine the challenges and opportunities of reducing emissions while supplying the needs of a growing global economy in an era of energy transition. That theme was made more complex and poignant with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine less than two weeks before the conference began. With this extraordinary background, here are my takeaways from the event.

World events were thrust to the forefront.

On a personal level, we were all shaken by the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s regime. I joined my industry colleagues in condemning the human suffering and atrocities brought on by this war and continue to hope for a peaceful resolution.

At the same time, we contemplated what this means for the future of our industry and clean energy initiatives. We find ourselves at an unanticipated crossroads: Will the focus on current energy security needs delay the long-sought-after energy transition?

We need multiple pathways towards a net-zero world.

The message from CERAWeek presenters is clear—there is no single, one-fits-all solution to achieve net zero emissions. There are too many geopolitical, regional, infrastructural, and regulatory differences. Each entity will have to take its own path to ultimately create a collective net-zero world.

Success will take time; prioritize efforts.

For a country or an organization to achieve net zero, there will be multiple solutions and many milestones along the journey. Focus on the low-hanging fruit that yields immediate benefits for lower emissions, acknowledging the fact that those benefits will be incremental. As many entities are already doing, concurrently build and execute parallel strategies aimed toward achieving mid-term and long-term objectives.

Net Zero will require a joint and a collaborated effort from each of us.

CERAWeek attendees emphasized that net zero cannot be achieved by individual entities. This is going to require collaboration at its highest efficiency among regulatory authorities, business leaders, academia, and others coming together for the common good.

Technology will lead the way.

Last, but not least (and my personal favorite), I was inspired by the presentations showcasing technology in the CERAWeek Innovation Agora. We heard about initiatives to develop hydrogen as a zero-emissions fuel, as well as a feedstock gas or source of heat to power facilities. It was intriguing to witness discussions about implementing plans for hydrogen production, processing, distribution, and storage.

As I mentioned previously, carbon management earned its own hub this year. Several operators showcased their active projects with carbon capture with permanent storage (CCS) and utilization of captured CO2 (CCU). These two techniques are promising solutions toward carbon-neutral processes and possibly net negative gas intensity of products.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on CERAWeek 2022 or any of the ideas presented here. Please feel free to comment.
