GEN Malaysia to pay US$126MDB-linked superyacht

Casino operator Genting Malaysia Bhd reportedly agreed to buy its luxury yacht Equinities for US$126 million last year, despite failing to attract the level of bidding required when it came up for auction. 온라인 슬롯

The controversial vessel was allegedly stolen from Malaysia\'s state investment fund 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and paid for by its previous owner, Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho. The vessel was later seized by the state.

One investment analyst told GGRAsia that Genting Malaysia\'s move could help address tax issues unrelated to the Malaysian government, although the operational justification of yacht ownership could be controversial.

In a press release included in a report to Bursa Malaysia on Wednesday, the company said Genting Malaysia would settle the full amount for its Equality purchase by the end of the month. The purchase "will not impact" the gaming company\'s revenue and could provide a "unique and competitive edge over its premium customer business," according to the company\'s statement.

The sale of the superyacht was first announced by Malaysian Attorney General Tommy Thomas in a statement on Wednesday, who said Genting Malaysia\'s proposal had been approved by a naval court in Kuala Lumpur.

The game operator\'s bid followed direct negotiations with the Malaysian government and was the "highest price" of all offers received to acquire the luxury yacht, media said, citing Mr Thomas. Malaysia\'s Finance Minister Im Kwan-eng also told media on Wednesday that the sale of the yacht to Genting Malaysia was the "highest price" the government could get based on an open bid.
